Why do wide men rarely go on the outside any more. Especially our wide men? 12:15 - Oct 22 with 871 viewsPacittiJohn

Although Philogene has done well cutting in, it’s so predictable from our other wide men. Wes seems to be the only player in the squad capable of doing this (and Leif although not strictly in a wide role) and when he’s fit will he ever get the chance again as team selections seem to be based upon the cost of a player? For a centre forward it’s easier to finish a cross that is swung in from the line/wide right/left, rather than a ball delivered from a player cutting in. Ipswich need so much more variation to the way they play, but McKenna’s approach continues to be predictable.

RBs and LBs are quite athletic now. McAteer patently can't. Philogene and Clerke are both right footed so if both are playing one at least of them are going to be cutting in rather than going outside. Rather than wingers taking defenders on one on one, what we are missing is the Chaplin type player to put receive the ball draw the defender and then slide the ball through on the angle for the wingere to run onto. It is more efficient than trying to take a dfender on one on one when there might also be a covering player if he does beat him. Omari was pretty good one on one, Burns less so in recent years as he was considered fast at League one level, but not at Championship and prem level. We miss that Donacien, Chaplin, burns type triangle so badly or the more recent one with Tuenze and Omari.

That’s a good summary. Letting Chaplin go was a mistake. All that guile and experience, and a few of the players brought in do not have the qualities or skill that Chaplin possesses. Call me nostalgic but there’s been a lot of money wasted on bang average players.

The same Conor Chaplin who's played in 6 games for Portsmouth and hasn't had a goal, an assist, or even a shot on target?

In answer to the OP's question, probably because we're playing inverted wingers.

Oh well that excuses it then.

Clarke got to the byline quite a lot on both flanks to get crosses in. One I remember went for a corner the other zipped passed the goal for a 3 yard tap in but no one there to tap it in. Probably sums up why our wide men feel like they need to take on the responsibility to score themselves by cutting inside and shooting

In defence of McAteer not being able to take on a defender he has better feet than Wes, but is probably not as quick. Wes has never been able to use skill to beat a player, he just ran very well in to gaps.

Speaking of Wes remember that tactic Burgess used to have of that long diagonal ball into the right wing position, where Burns would either win it in the air or beat the defender for pace. Those were the days.

I would say that KMs approach is to recycle if there is not a good percentage prospect of getting an effective cross in. And also that none of our wingers are very quick...

I feel like you could see this seep out of our play style in the premier league.

In the second half of the season our play got safer and safer. I lost count of the number of occasions we had an overlap and failed to use it - almost as if we believe a cross is such a low value play that it was better to avoid them entirely.

Maybe for a Pep team but not for Ipswich. It was noticeable how did St rent our approach was to that of wolves and forest in that regard. I.e Willingness to take a chance at getting defenders running back towards their goal even if they lost possession.

Seems like they would take a 10% chance of goal, but we want a 90% chance (but more often come away empty handed) it seems this is now a feature of our play rather than the lack of risk taking adopted in the prem as a coping mechanism.

….because there’s no one in the box capable of putting it away so they have to have a go themselves.
