A (tired) McKenna interview masterclass - McAteer good narrative 23:17 - Nov 25 with 1662 viewsunstableblue

Look I know McAteer frustrates with his end product but I actually think he’s got a footballing brain in him and really impressive physical attributes.

McKenna makes the point that Giles has been a real key player for Hull, and a creator of threat and chances, he has EIGHT assists this season.

But McAteer contained him but also stretched him, and for me Giles should have seen a second yellow card - he pulled McAteer back twice AFTER his first yellow.

I can see something in McAteer.

As gav said earlier tho he did that aspect well. The issue is hes pss poor with the ball. I think km is saving face tbh I really do. He'll be replaced in jan imo. Similar to when we got harness and then broady came in months later. He'll still be here but think he ll end up a bit part

I am also a believer in McAteer since, correct me if Im wrong, Swansea?
The physical desire, running and tracking back were all impressive and for me a sign that better things can come from him.

To be clear, I don't see him as a finisher and dont think he'll ever really round that part of his game off in the next couple of years at least but I do think in the long run he can step up to Wes' plate as that direct runner outball who can cross or cut back to Sindre in the 10 as Wes and Chaplin did so many times

This truly feels like totally focussing on a few things McAteer didn’t get right tonight, and completely ignoring the good he did/does.

Hirst & Clark were probably our two most disappointing players tonight, but this is overlooked because they’re many peoples ‘poster’ players.

For what it’s worth, I think most players put in a good account tonight, with Nunez Matusiwa and Greaves being the pick of the bunch (in that order). McAteer was a middling performance, but definitely ahead of quite a few others.

No doubt he’s got all the physical attributes. Just seems to lack a bit of quality on the ball sadly, hopefully it comes and he can develop that side but he’s looking exactly the player Leicester fans said he was. He’ll play a part, I doubt he’ll play a £11m part but that is what it is. Hopefully Burns can come back and Egeli can continue to develop. I’d like Szmodics back fit as well, I think he’s a dangerous attacking option off the bench.

Do hope he makes it… BUT he needs to show some rapid improvement in his end product- that incisive assist you reference, especially as Furlong is such an orthodox right back.

McAteer needs to do the energetic tracking to make us solid on the right, but also give us threat.

An assist can’t come soon enough.

As I said I do think he’s got some good attributes, and as McKenna said he set the stage for the subs and kept one of Hulls creators in check, all through his work rate.

But I do also think the team and especially fans need more from him in terms of attacking quality.

Interesting you mention the Leicester fans’ view, an opposition fan base when taken as whole from their forums are rarely wrong on the quality of a player… I’m hoping McAteer may be an exception.

Let’s back him vocally.

If he keeps Giles quiet, he’ll make an important contribution to us winning this game.

That might sound daft, but imagine if the opposition RW keeps Leif quiet, and how influential that can be.

I dont think anyone doubts that Mcateer is athletically more than capable. He did similar good off the ball work at Swansea, I actually thought he was better at Swansea than he was tonight.

Not sure what the ceiling is with him though, decent championship player perhaps. Im not surprised we signed the player, cause he is a bit Kayden Jackson/Marcus Harness like and McKenna likes having a player like that who can nullify and work hard. Im surprised we spent so much money on that sort of player though, It just seems odd.

If we get promoted this season who cares about 12 million quid though I guess, We would be dropping much bigger fees then.
