Publicly owned water companies in the UK aren’t noticeably any better.

There is a huge failure in regulation though.

This bloke is a bloody legend. Yes he made shed loads of cash, but the work he does on behalf of us is a real public service. I’ll be gutted if it turns out he’s got skeletons in the cupboard lol

He highlights the issues really well and shows how companies are using complexity to bamboozle customers. Their investigation of mobile and broadband could look at 47,000 different tariffs. 47,000! No wonder people often just stick on what they’ve got and don’t go through the hassle of switching (which needing to in order to not have inflation busting price increases is a scam in it’s own right).

Poll: Escaped Goat of the day. Who’s it going to be?

It's the standing charges for energy bills which is the biggest swindle known to man

We are very happy with our publicly owned water in Scotland.

Never been asset stripped, and the priority is to maintain a sustainable, clean water supply as a public good at a reasonable price.

As that old Honda Accord ad with all the nuts and bolts knocking into each other used to say:

Don't you love it when something just...

...works!

Welsh water however is decidedly meh:

From everything I’ve read the way water industry is owned has basically no correlation with how much the water costs, how much investment is put into infrastructure, how clean it is, how much sewage leaks and so forth.

The customer has to pay for all the good stuff one way or another anyway. The biggest issue seems to be that the water companies have been used as financial instruments to effectively allow dividends to be paid against future revenue, making the shareholders rich and the companies deeply in debt. All done while the regulators seemingly sat on their hands.

Why are they a swindle? The cost of maintaining the energy grid is as much (if not more) than the cost of production of the energy distributed by it.

If someone is connected to the grid, self-supplies for most of the year using renewables but then needs power from the grid for the rest, they are still benefitting from the cost of running that grid.

The issue is that the grid has been privatised (in multiple layers) and that each layer now wants to take a profit out. However, if we did manage to renationalise it, there is still a fixed cost to having this asset.

In terms of performance (turds in rivers and on our beaches) it’s not great. I suppose it’s all well and good being not for profit in terms of operating costs, but you can’t polish those turds if they’re still in Victorian systems.
