We could have deservedly gone into half time a few goals ahead against a team that’s won every home game except one in 2026.

Against World Class players, with a team of strangers still we were bright, positive and deserved our lead.

We conceded to a slip - unfortunate, a clear deliberate hand ball for me that then deflects in - unlucky, a double deflected shot - how unlucky can you get, and even Mbeumo’s shot hits the bar and spins in when it could have gone over or dropped for Greaves to clear.

Yes we lost our discipline for a bit against World Class players in one of the most intimating stadiums in World football but we could have easily come away with a win, a draw or a narrow defeat.

We were on the end of three or four incredibly tight margins.

We will be absolutely fine this season. As Bent said we have the squad now to be in nearly every game and we now know we can go to the toughest teams away and give it a right good go.

More players will be incoming. Luis, Matasiwa etc to come back. United were pulling away with Dorgu and Sesko coming on. We had McAteer, Akpom and Furlong. Players we know aren’t up to the level. It’ll take time to add that depth. Our first 11-14 is, on paper, a competitive mid to lower half team.

Two years back in our first away game we lost our heads for ten minutes, lost by three goals in Manchester and looked a million miles off it. Today, for a huge part of the match, we looked every bit a decent Premier League side.

I agree to an extent but we still shipped 5 goals in a half so I’m not sure I’d use proud overall. I’m a bit deflated with the scoreline, we need to make ourselves more solid in crucial spells in games whoever the opposition.

Plenty of positives to be taken from the first half though the best I’ve seen us against a top side, just don’t want to see us on the end of many of those after conceding a goal. Felt too familiar.

Poll: Ok gut feeling then, promotion?

Shipped 4 in a half, Nunez's slip was before H/T.

Shipping five goals at any level isn’t good enough. Let alone after spending £170M.

I didn’t expect us to win or draw. But that second half is extremely poor and worrying.

We need a striker urgently. Moreover a right back and CB.

Thought we were excellent first half. But didn’t take a number of chances.

Shipping five goals isn’t great. But as I say.

Two were deflections, one of which shouldn’t have counted. One was a slip and one spun in off the bar and not out or over.

As I say very fine margins all went against us. On another day we concede two or three and stay in the game. Everything that could go their way luck wise did. We had none.

And for all that by the rules it stood it is preposterous that one of those stood.

They also hit the bar from a yard out and our keeper made 3 pretty big saves, it was pretty rough back there.

Well said , Rome wasn’t built in a day , fans need to be a little patient this season with so many new players , first half we more than held our own , second half we lost the plot and our confidence melted away quickly.
I will say it now so bump if you wish ……we will stay up .

I like the optimism. I agree it was a huge challenge and I also think Utd are a much better team than many people give them credit for now, especially at home. They are oozing quality and especially in their forward players. I thought we’d lose 3-1, so the result isn’t a surprise.

I was worried by our brain fart that last for about 10 mins and by how open we were. Although that mainly became a problem when we were chasing the game. I wouldn’t underplay the slip (he had an easy pass back but made the decision to try to get the ball back in, then lost control a bit and had to rush the attempted deep cross in - quality players don’t let that situation develop). Unfortunate yes, but avoidable.

We were well beaten. There’s no way we easily win or draw that game. It wasn’t a game of fine margins Mbeuno’s shot hitting the bar, for example, is neither here nor there; they were battering us at that point.

Positives, yes. Lots to work on, yes. Hopefully that’s been more beneficial to us than the largely meaningless pre-season games we had. Utd won’t be the only place we go with an intimidating crowns and team full of internationals. We need to handle our adversity better. Maybe not run towards it, but find a way to handle it.

Poll: Escaped Goat of the day. Who’s it going to be?

And likewise we could've scored 1 or 2 more.

For 45 minutes we looked every bit a real Premier League side that is committed to its approach and can hurt teams. Then for 45 minutes we took a bit of a battering from a really good side littered with really good footballers.

It was a snapshot of where we are right now, we have a strong core, whilst maybe being a little shy on depth in key areas, and ultimately still being a new era for the club, new squad, new manager, new league - there will be constant lessons throughout the season.

Them games will not define our season, we will face and hurt much weaker sides than Man Utd, and they will thump much stronger sides than us this year - no shame in our performance for me, it was brave and committed whilst we fell short, lessons to learn but plenty of positives to take.
