I had always thought that Carr was a player who had come up through our youth system but looking at Wikipedia I see that we signed him from Carisle when he was eighteen, so more of a development prospect. That uptake and his time here, followed by his release, all seemed to be quite low key to me compared with Humphreys, Barbrook, Mendel and others. But to go from English non-league to Scottish Premiership during a summer is quite a step up, maybe he just wasn't suited to the prospect of intensity throughout a game in the English leagues and can show his skills more in the scrappy (to the viewer, I bet everyone on this forum would be quickly embarrassed if we tried to turn out for St Mirren) and battling nature of the Premiership. Or maybe it's just that Paisley is a lot closer to Durham. | |

Is there any reason to believe that Scottish top tier is any less intense than the lower English professional leagues, although the standard of football isn't great? Most of the Scottish clubs outside the top tier are semi professional. [Post edited 10 Sep 8:59]

Having seen Josh Meekings warming up for Inverness back when they were in the Premiership I think I can say that Scottish football can be very relaxed, I can't see Leif Davis having a wee kick about and then deciding 'ach, that'll do...' | |

Over the last few years it has proven borderline impossible to get most of our young players out for good loan spells in English football.
Not sure what it is exactly. Ryan Carr spent some of last season on loan with Ebbsfleet in the National League with no interest from in the EFL. Can St. Mirren really be so much weaker than a L2 side? |  |

I assume we may receive a small income whenever he is transferred as part of our 'development fee'.

No doubt a lesser standard, but there are so many factors at play with young players. 6 - 12 months is a long time at 18-19 and players develop at different speeds. Sometimes your face just doesn't fit, you're played out of position, or the circumstances at a certain club don't lend themselves to bringing a young player into the fold when there's so much at stake, in our case we've grown far faster than most can keep pace with. Alternatively circumstances can make it a necessity, perhaps when its unwarranted, and that can be the opportunity for some young players who wouldn't otherwise have a sniff at senior football at that level.
Mental state, physical state and injuries, form, sliding doors moments of having your worst game of the season in the 1 game the scout or 1st team manager is present. I've spent a lot of time coaching in academy environments at pro clubs in the past and the ones you tip for the top rarely get there, others do way better than you might have thought at 16 / 17. So many factors in it, not least luck. Would St Mirren even be aware of Carr's existence had he not been eligible for Scotland U21's? Probably not.
Another thing is stickability. Every professional football is capable of a good game, the top ones do it more often. Consistency is everything if you're to earn the trust of a manager.
Carr was highly thought of when we brought him down here, he's got himself a good move, hopefully he can make something of it. |  | | |
