Expensive lump hammer paying for itself on first use - two bashes on a Suffolk door latch that had kept jumping open straightened it out nicely and solved the problem, saving handyman call out :)
Similar related note, wife was going away for the weekend and told me the washing machine was broken and I'd need to source a new one before she got back. No further instructions on what was broken.
Decided to have a closer look, was clearly an issue with the drum - had myself a beer and jumped on YouTube, found some destroy it yourself videos, and fixed the issue.
A year later, the tumble dryer starts smoking while in use. Obviously sub-optimal. More YouTube, another beer, stripped it down and cleared four cubic metres of lint out from the heating element.
Do I receive any praise for either of these issues?

Tumble dryers are dangerous feckers; never leave one alone with your whisky.
Good work by Philogene...... GREAT WORK BY PHILOGENE!!!

That is mightily impressive.

I'm not remotely "handy" when it comes to this sort of thing.
But, certainly when it came to stripping apart a washing machine, several beers had been involved before I just wondered "how hard can it be?".
Turns out it's a complete ball ache, but when you've got yourself to a stage where it's pretty much disassembled, it's 2AM and you realise you've gone too far to stop- you just plough on through.
Using this approach, I've now fixed the washer, the tumble, a dodgy as feck Chinese air fryer and sorted some rat eaten wiring in the loft.
Still no good at this stuff, just stubborn, tight and don't like to lose!
Our 25 year old chest freezer packed up. The local council do free pick-ups for large items, so I booked a collection. They couldn't get it for three weeks, so I investigated the fault with online help. Turns out it was the thermistor which cost just a couple of quid. Replaced it and all working again for another 25 years. Cancelled the pickup. We probably don't need a chest freezer since the kids left home and it would have been nice to make some space in the garage, but a win is a win.

my favourite garden tool is a wrecking bar (5ft heavy metal bar with a pointy end). few landscaping tasks aren't made easier and more fun by hitting something with that.
And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

And that, my friend, is always a win.
Chest freezers are a proper dad flex. I can guarantee it's got about 500 choc ices, from c 1983 stuck in one corner as well, hasn't it?
Automatic garage door kept getting stuck. Called a repairman who immediately quoted €800 for a new motor. YouTube and €20 later on a can of Teflon spray on the coils and hinges and all was back to normal.
The amount of light fabric that gets past the lint trap and onto the heating elements is insane.
I'm astounded houses aren't going up in flames on an hourly basis. I'll not countenance ours being on without an adult in the house, not overnight.
Heated towel rails do the job at a fraction of the price, nearly as quickly (30 mins for a football shirt), completely safely, and give out a nice background heat too :)
About 15 years ago, when my washing machine bust I decided it would be difficult to take to the recycling tip so I decided to dismantle it into bits, just to see what it looked like, really. I discovered there's a massive concrete ring thing in it that weighs down the drum. I kept that bit which has become a really useful heavy weight, for weighing things down in the garden when stormy.

Believe me, you would get praise if you spent some of the cash saved on her wardrobe update or a fancy meal.

Ah ... Keno and Mellow, you've touched on two key moments in my life ...
My first hearing of 'If I had a hammer' was sung by Trini Lopez when I was 14, on the way back from a holiday with my bestie and her family in the New Forest, at exactly this time of year (possibly even the same date). Was just beoming socially conscious I guess, found both the choon and lyrics immediately very emotional, haunting, and I think subconsciosly possibly life-shaping ("the hammer of justice, the bell of freedom").
'Maxwell's Silver Hammer' takes me right back to married life in London in mid-30s. Friends of ours had had a late baby, called him Maxwell, bantz that he was named after the song etc.
