“If we could learn to look instead of gawking,
We'd see the horror in the heart of farce,
If only we could act instead of talking,
We wouldn't always end up on our arse.
This was the thing that nearly had us mastered;
Don't yet rejoice in his defeat, you men!
Although the world stood up and stopped the bastard,
The bitch that bore him is in heat again.”

― Bertolt Brecht, The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui

As long as there are enough willing to accept lies because hatred is easier than thinking this wound will never heal.

It won't become a scar reminding us of what happened, but a running sore that continues to fester and bleed

Also: It's the umpteenth time I've pushed this book, but the man is my hero.

Please read If This Is a Man by Primo Levi (including his return to Italy after the war that is covered by The Truce). It's his personal account of Auschwitz and the aftermath but throughout he attempts to understand the Holocaust and its implications to us as humans. And IMO he's come as close as anyone to highlighting the lessons we need to learn.
