It's not so much any danger to the remains of the power station itself (which is all well sealed in with concrete. More of an issue is the radioactive materials within plants and the soil being lifted into the atmosphere with smoke from the fires and distributed downwind.

What has gone through the mind of the individual who lit that?

As well as the radiation risk Guthrum suggests, the area is one of most unspoilt in Europe in terms of wildlife I would imagine since it has been evacuated.

I find it quite depressing someone would start a fire "for fun" at 27 years old. I did that kind of stupid sh1t when I was 13 and soon learned my lesson when I set alight to a stack of hay bails.
