While I'm all for the value of an independent, inquiring mass media that speaks truth to power, we really haven't had that for many years. It's the cosy insider, client journalism that's destroyed them as a positive force in our democracy. Not to mention the partisan campaigning that far too many indulge in.

Of course, this affects some very good individual reporters, and some excellent sport and cultural coverage. But if the media are forced to get their house in order to become relevant and valued again (addressing the fact that the UK media is the least trusted in the OECD) then there's a greater good at stake here.

The Times would have been wise to make this article open-access (if their system allows). They would have won much good will.

There's no doubt that every British newspaper handled the transition from paper to digital pretty badly. But to then complain people don't want to pay for your product when you've sacked a load of decent journos, subs, etc and pursued clickbait instead, it's really no wonder.

True. Albeit that's one article that's in no way representative of their normal output. They'll earn good will by keeping it up.

If, as I suspect, the pandemic has them rushing to get on the right side of history, you've got to wonder how they and others have been seeing the world and reporting on it up until now.

Indeed. I have friends in the industry so I understand fully that the Internet brought increased workload shared around fewer staff, and that was always going to lead to less investigative journalism.

Unfortunately, they've still invested far too much in shallow, clickbaity opinion pieces even when they could be doing the boring, detailed stuff.
