In 1977 Ipswich won the national Daily Exspess 5 a side . At Wembley Arena. I was there that evening but can not remember who we beat in the final. Can not find anything about it on line. Except confirming our winning that year. Anyone else remember this ?

Don't remember Dean Gordon, Dale mind was an excellent player.
‘Disco’ Dale, Yarmouth born? town fan! Wasn’t he part of the shenanigans at the youth tournament in France where Doz, and maybe Brennan, ended up in a fountain?

From "The Men Who Made The Town" we beat Coventry 3-1 in the Final having beaten Wolves and Newcastle on penalties and West Ham 2-0.
The squad was Cooper, Mills, Osman, Talbot, Mariner and Woods.

Interesting line-up. Apart from Woods it doesn't feature what you might consider ball players, such as Viljoen, for instance. I guess the likes of Gates, Thijssen and Muhren came a bit later.

The "fives" used to be a decent, fun competition until some clubs worked out that if you could get a goal ahead, it was very easy to defend or even settle for a 0-0 & penalties. So it became like extra time in a World Cup game.

Viljoen missed most of 1977/78 through injury and did not play for the first team at all the previous season. It was before Muhren and Thijssen but Gates was around the first team but not established as a starter so those in the 5 aside squad were probably just about the best available at the time.

Yes, I'd forgotten how injury prone Viljoen became. After being one of the first names on the team sheet & winning 2 England caps, he was injured early on in the 1975-6 season & only started 9 league games all season, missed the entire next season as you said, and only started 10 games in 1977-78. No wonder some of the players were outraged when he looked earmarked to start the 1978 Cup final if he came through his return at Villa Park successfully.

That brings back memories, wasn't there also something called the 'Skol sevens' around teh same time?
I remember the Atari Soccer Sixes at the Birmingham NEC (I think).
We lost to Brum in the final one year, something ridiculous like 8-4.
Would have been early 80's, post SBR.
Edit. Just seen this, we'll see how good my memory really is.
Also, this from 1988 featuring Mark Brennan, Tony Mowbray and Russell Osman in the same game, alongside a presumably unknown Matt Le Tissier given Motty's pronunciation of his name.
