US secretary of state Mike Pompeo issued a statement condemning the law. “The CCP [China Communist party] promised Hong Kong 50 years of freedom to the Hong Kong people, and gave them only 23,”

Remarkably on the money.

China, like Russia, just does what it wants with no ramifications. Basically, a country that has free speech and protest programmed into its mentality has been taken away overnight. I imagine a lot of investment will be pulled and will head to Singapore, Tokyo etc. Everywhere has its problems and arcane rules but I wouldn't risk visiting HK now.

A huge amount of expats will be getting out ASAP but the UK as a duty of care to HK after colonial rule. China must be in breach of the handover terms.

They are totally in breach of the handover agreement but there is very little anyone can do. There is also the uncomfortable question of why the west should make a stand about 7m people in Hong Kong but not about 7m Uighur being ethnically cleansed and held in concentration camps.

The only way to really hurt them is to stop Hong Kong being a financial centre but that's unlikely to happen as well given the timezone and existing infrastructure (in the same way the exodus from London that was feared never happened).

US and UK making good noises about potentially taking on HK citizens. Especially those at risk of arbitrary detention.

Canada have updated their travel advice saying there is increased risk of arbitrary detention and potential extradition to mainland.

I think the London exodus was always unlikely as it was always based on services not goods. Goods post Brexit will be more difficult and suspect some will continue to relocate or change their footprint of investment.

I know that was then, but it could be again..

Yes and that's good and hopefully will be taken up by those who are eligible although I thought the UK offer was based around historical BNO qualification?

However you didn't respond to my first point. Isn't it an uncomfortable question to ask why are we willing to make exceptions for HK citizens at risk of arbitrary detention but we aren't willing to do the same for Uighur citizens who are at risk from arbitrary detention. I know it's not quite the same thing as they are on the mainland already but it's interesting to see the contrasting positions when perceived western values are being threatened (ie. loss of existing freedom in HK).

Yes it is. It's obviously a gross and large scale violation of human rights. I didn't respond because as you say, I'm not entirely sure what can be done and once they are on the mainland, China are far less accountable.

Australia are pushing for an investigation into the origins of covid and are getting hammered with tariffs. China are impossible diplomatically because they deny, say people are meddling or ignore every negative and attack every negative about countries with open and transparent press.

It's kicked off today with protesters out and ignoring the new law.

This subject has been very contentious in the past, but as Chris Pattern just said on newsnight different countries need to club together to sanction the communist party in China. Unfortunately the west sold its soul to China quite a few ago and possibly will now pay the price!
