I'm wondering whether anyone from Trip Adviser has, err, come across that article and is preparing a new angle on their, err, service at this very moment...

Chris Hitchens was once asked he had ever prayed.

His reply "I prayed for a hardon once."

Historically, people were far less prudish about sex and the human body than we have become since the latter 19th century. Pretty understandable when you consider that families mostly lived in close proximity, both amongst themselves and to their neighbours. It was not uncommon for the whole family to sleep in a single bed (they couldn't afford more than one, or the separate rooms to put them in). It was just a common fact of life, which they encountered every day.

Altho that is partly disguised by the fact that much of the surviving writing was produced in single-sex, celibate* monastic institutions - who obviously had a somewhat different approach.

* Even they were not so rigid as you might think. It was not that uncommon for people to join after their spouse had died (particularly in middle and upper levels of society). Nor, indeed, for people to leave and subsequently marry. There was also a regular smattering of scandals alleging inappropriate behaviour in contravention of the accused's vows.
