It's a measure of the times that we used to have more than enough to see them off. Docherty was a real football man, lived for the game, & a real character. Not sure if you would call him a great, but I'd take him over Lambert! He'd probably do a better job even now.

There are many Tommy Docherty stories & some of them might actually be true.
My favourite is when, as a Preston player, he asked for a pay rise, to as much as £14 during the season & £12 in the summer (it was common for players to be paid less during the off season in those days).
The Preston director spluttered "But that's as much as Tom Finney's on - and Finney's a better player than you!"
"Not in the summer he isn't" retorted the Doc.
