I'm not convinced this is a major harbinger of doom. People (at the extreme end of all directions on the political chart) have been plotting revolutions and insurrections since time immemorial. With more or less organisational ability, but very often grandiose pretentions as to their reach and capabilities. His entire plan is predicated on a collapse of US society, a civil war they can try to take advantage of. The same civil (race) war they've been eagerly anticipating since the 1960s and before. It hasn't happened yet and, despite some significant jolts recently, does not look likely. Mainly because a majority of the population have no appetite for bloodshed on the streets. If you want to liken it to any stage of the prelude to the Second World War, it's akin to the earliest stages of the nazi party, when they were still out-and-out revolutionaries, before the Beer Hall Putsch was crushed. At that time, the nazis were among a host of groups in Bavaria alone, all pretty similar - and competing. They only stand a chance of taking it beyond that stage if anyone has the comprehension and deftness of Hitler (and, to some extent, Trump) in switching to and making effective use of the standard political structures. Violent extremists squeaking into the ether from foreign bolt-holes are not the danger. Skilled political manipulators are. Trump understood media and got to be President. This guy understands shooting people and is a fugitive who had his network shut down. | |
