I'm genuinely baffled as to how he kept people behind him as long as he did, given the utterly limp nature of the relegation he steered us to.

He was very canny to start with. Get the legends back at the club. Tell the fans that they were wonderful. Get the ground spruced up focusing on the colour blue.
