I’m really split on this. We have a squad which should be able to compete but it lacks balance. Considering where Gill (not Lambert) left us, you’d think the plays off at the very least would be obtainable? | |

We should be making the play offs.
However, what matters most is the long term development of a team and a squad that can compete in the Championship. It is no good simply ensuring promotion from this league if we are still the same mess we are or even the one we were when we came down.
Cook needs to offload a lot of players and probably also bring in some who are the right players for the system and partnerships he is trying to develop. That is just to get the squad right to stay up in the Championship (or compete for automatic promotion). |  |

Yes, altho that disaster would be a function of the whole season, not just the next few weeks. We really oughtn't to have been in a position of battling to get into the play-offs and stay there, especially given the start we had. |  |

From the position we are in it is a realistic target. Automatic promotion is a massive ask from here. We all know that the play offs are a bit of a lottery where it comes down to overcoming similar quality teams in individual ties.
At the start of the season promotion was the aim and to do it through the play offs would have been scraping the objective while losing the play offs would have been narrowly missing out (although there is a big difference between losing them on a dodgy refereeing decision after finishing behind 3rd on goal difference and losing the semi-final by 3 or 4 goals after scraping into 6th). | |

Not at this level for this club no, just making the playoffs is not good enough.

upto a point, and we used to have the same debate back in the late 90s about getting promoted into the premiership, as memories of 5-0 drubbings every week were still fresh and no one wanted instant relegation.
but the reality is the longer the club stay in L1, the less money we make and the bigger the gap grows to the Championship, let alone the Premiership which might seem a distant memory but was once of the aim of the club to get back there, not just get out of the 3rd tier of English football.
football is no longer a business where you can incrementally build season after season to get the "right" team to move forward with, youve got to work with what youve got, and we have to get out of this league at the earliest opportunity, we cant afford not to. | | | |
