Rugby warning: So what about the Lions selection then? 10:40 - Mar 27 with 709 viewsDarth_Koont

That was a very enjoyable 6 Nations and probably the best, most genuinely competitive set of matches in recent history. For everyone bar Italy, if just one moment in one game had gone another way then they could have won it.

Garland has a pretty tough task but who would be your starting XV in the First Test against the Boks?

I’d go:

15. Hogg
14. Rees-Zammit
13. Harris
12. Henshaw
11. May
10. Russell
9. Murray
1. Wyn Jones
2. Ken Jones
3. Sinckler
4. Itoje
5. Ryan
6. Beirne
7. Watson
8. Simmonds

But barring Hogg and Itoje, I don’t see any other shoo-ins anywhere. Edit: Actually I need to add Henshaw to that – he was outstanding and should definitely play in one of the centre positions.

Great team that, Manu was being mentioned and would be perfect for Gatland but not sure when he’s due back or how much he’ll play between now and July.

The issue is England players were so off the pace no one can be sure of it’s down to them or Jones. Gatland has a touch decision to make regarding them.

also - Gatland a Jamie George fan, you imagine Farrell as a bench option for his kicking and versatility.

Think that’s going to be the issue for Gatland – not leaning too heavily on players who have certainly been good in the past and could be again.

I’d like to see him pick a side that asks many more questions of the Boks, which is why I feel Farrell would be a mistake at 10 or 12. Works for England arguably but I can see a much more dynamic side just by putting Russell in there and letting him bring the backs and back-rowers into play in a myriad of different ways.

Talking of dynamism that’s another issue for the pack. Do we really want to take the Springboks on in an arm-wrestle or do we want to be more mobile? I think Simmonds was my choice at 8 purely because I’d like to see more speed.

I wouldnt argue too much with anything you have said there.

I think the bench will have to make a huge impact as well.

Sexton or Farrell for the back top fly half could be a good debate

Agree - imagine you’d want Sexton to come on if you’re chasing a game and Farrell to see it out.
Vunopolas have let things slide otherwise Billy at 8 for me.

On one hand, it would make sense to have Murray, Sexton and Henshaw all working together as normal. On the other hand, that would be much easier for the Boks to prepare for than Murray, Russell and Henshaw.

Think the debate around 10 and 12 (if that’s how Farrell is going to be squeezed in) is going to be pretty fierce. But if I were Gatland I’d get that sorted first. Seems like it will define the whole approach.

Not much to argue with here, I'd certainly be apprehensive about including any of the Sarries contingent given 2 games are being played at high altitude and there lack of games/fitness/form

True. That would also argue against a lumbering, heavy pack.

So, someone like Billy Vunipola shouldn’t really be in the conversation at all based on recent form, fitness, weight and speed. Not to mention match sharpness in the Summer after playing for Saracens in the Championship. Now watch him be first name on Gatland’s teamsheet!
