Honestly, I don't know what to think about this one.

At 32, he is reaching the final phase of his career. However, he has proven he can still score goals in a poor Derby side at the end of last season. Wouldn't be first choice by any stretch, probably battling Bonne for 2nd choice.

Linked with Middlesbrough, Derby County and Sheffield Wednesday already this summer. Poacher, 'natural scoring ability' is his description. He also scored twice against us the last time we were in the Championship.

Love to know what you guys think, if he was to be a squad option. Better than Jackson? For our style?

His left toe, yes, just his left toe is better than Jackson. As for our style, if Cook only plays one up front, back up only

He is the kind of player that we would be reasonably happy with if we were still under Lambert and M.E. A solid if not spectacular goal scoring record at league 1 and champ level over a good period of time, but obviously on the decline now as a player.

But we are not under Lambert and ME, and I think we can do better now.

Poor Jacko! Wonder when he is going to be let go, problem is no team is going to pay the valuation of him which, at this point, is probably down to the 300k-400k mark. Maybe we can make mugs of a team in Scotland :)

Yep, can't see him being a first-choice striker anywhere but a bottom half League One side for now on. I think he could be an interesting option of the bench for the final 25-30 minutes in games, but this is solely going to be based on value. You'd hope it would be below 150,000k because he hasn't been great for Stoke.

My only worry is, and I fully respect your opinion, I'm not sure if we can bring in 'better'.

The only we can do better is by bringing in a new number one striker, and I don't think Paul Cook would want James Norwood and Macauley Bonne as his 2nd and 3rd choices, because neither would be happy.

I think, for the striker position, the best possible player for us to bring in is someone who will be 2nd or 3rd choice, and would either have to be a older, natural finisher but limited to 30 mins player.

Or, it would have to be a younger, more energetic but less know-how of the league, and trying to mould them into something good.

On WIkipedia (i know could be rubbish) it says he left Millwall to Stoke " expressing his desire to move back up north."

However, I know player just say this stuff as well to justify their move.

I personally think he has a decent record especially at Millwall. Doesn't seem like a massive goalscorer so depends who we had around him whether he would be effective.

We seem to be linked with loads of people at the moment!

Saw the same from a lot of accounts on Twitter. Born in Sheffield, and outside of Millwall the majority of his clubs have been north of London. Sheffield Wed link was surprising, because he went through the Sheffield Utd academy, but you can see from them, Derby and Middlesbrough the location could tell the story.

Think the only way he would come back down here, is if Cook can sell it too him, or maybe he was a fan of the area when he spent four years with Millwall? Deep-dived Twitter a lot, bunch of fans said he always put his chances away. Suggests to me, that he didn't get the ball enough in the penalty area. Someone that thrives of service like Norwood and Wyke?

Yep links flying everywhere, makes it more fun for me because we get to have these kind of discussions

I've seen him quite a lot as I'm a season ticket holder at Stoke & the one thing you can't fault is his work rate. He literally runs himself in to the ground every game & battles for everything. His scoring return isn't too bad & he was in & out of the Stoke team under O'Neil before he went to Derby. He can win the odd header & draws a few fouls in dangerous positions due to his hold up play, but the one thing that he lacks unfortunately is any pace. If we're looking for power & athleticism in our front line then I wouldn't be advocating signing Lee Gregory.

Better than Jackson in our current style yes, & would be a decent option to see a game out, but I'd like to see more pace in our front line.

I'm still not convinced we are 'in' for a striker who will be expecting starts
If you want a small squad, you dont want 3 unhappy strikers when you only have 1 striker role up for grabs.
We already have Norwood, high earner at Town
We have Bonne on loan which I can't see QPR being happy with if hes on the bench all season

If we are to sign another striker, I think it'll be a young league 1 or 2 striker

Never be afraid to share your thoughts.

Without having any inside knowledge, it looks like Cook wants to avoid having two of the exact same players in one position. You look at Penney and maybe Coulson if he joins, one likes to cross from deep, the other likes to drive closer to the byline. Celina and Michael Jacobs couldn't be more different, but both are linked with LW role.

Cook currently has Norwood, who is our all-round strongest goalscorer. We know he bullies defenders, runs into channels well. Bonne has searing pace apparently, wins headers and plays off the last man. Gregory, from the description you've given, sounds like he stays more central, wins fouls, and pops up on the penalty spot.

Will be an interesting story to follow, probably won't be Cook's main focus right now however.

That's what I'm thinking. Surely the only way we go in for someone like Gregory is if he is happy playing 'second or third fiddle.' Looks to be similar to Will Keane, either scores goals for fun or has a injury issue.

I wouldn't be surprised if we went for another Troy Parrott type, someone 18/19/20 coming in on loan from one of the 'big six' teams in the Premiership with our staffs connections. Being 3rd choice, able to play another position for example?

Very good point about the differences in players we are signing.............. might be worth a blog on that alone....

Think I will do once the squad gets more packed out. Hopefully we get to a point end of July were Cook comes out and says 'all we need is 1 or 2 now.' Once that happens, then I'll probably analyse each player individually and why Cook went for them exactly.

Messi only wants £500,000 a week. Kane is cheap at £150M. Maybe we can persuade Ronaldo from Juve. We are still L1 for now, so please be realistic.
