Arguably the recent Tory Party's biggest achievement (for themselves at least) has been to convince much of the public that ethics and standards in public life don't matter. We see it with Patel keeping her job after being found guilty of bullying and in breach of the ministerial code, we see it with Johnson not sacking Hancock, we see it with the guff Cummings was allowed to spout to justify breaching lockdown, we see it with the brushing off of the lies and illegal conduct of the Vote Leave campaign, we see it - perhaps writ largest of all - in Boris fecking Johnson somehow being our PM. You see the effects on here all the time too, people defending it by saying all politicians do x, y, z or by saying "Well, strictly speaking they haven't done anything illegal" except, of course, on those occasions where they have and some other justification can be found. It's utterly depressing. Standards in public life have never been lower and it's enabling those in power and those close to them to feather their nests, often with public money, in plain sight with barely anyone batting an eye lid. Country has lost its head. | |
