Having looked at the goals.. 07:29 - Nov 21 with 1054 views | norfsufblue | I still can't understand why when the whole team retreats to defend a corner that you can't cover both posts.... even with Wsltons misjudgement yester a guy standing on the far post clears that 99 times out of 100... doesn't he?

Pigott was on at that point aswell wasn't he? on his own he'd had coped at the back post, there's no reason for not having someone on that post though, they clearly moved away from the post surely, otherwise big questions need to be asked about that. Walton, can see why he came, but also if you do, you have to get the ball no alternative

Walton will be kicking himself over that, sods law though that it ends up in the back of the net, caught in no mans land though, i suppose a keeper has a second to decide whether to come for the cross or not, overall he's been very good though, they all have an error in them even at the top level..

My point is that we had 4 players challenging their 1.... surely one of them staying on the line/post is basic common sense?

What annoys me is that we continue to defend in numbers from a corner and still cannot man mark the opposition. Why oh why can’t we leave a man upfield from corners, the opposition then have to put 2 men on him, surely this is common sense but has been a theme of defending under McCarthy, Lambert and Cook

Roy Keane, whilst he was here, stated that statistically not a lot of goals are scored from breakaways following a corner so there is little point in leaving a man upfield. It’ll be interesting to see a team leave three players upfield whilst defending a corner - one in the middle with the other team on either side of the pitch - sort of stretching the play. Doesn’t seem fashionable to leave players defending the posts. When I say fashionable, a couple top teams with world class players and coaches decided to do it that way and everyone else decided that this was for them as well.

Walton really unlucky, He just ran into Edmundson who didn't get out his way. Their player didn't even head the ball, it came off his face and went in. Joke of a goal and their first shot on goal the whole game. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Yep a crazy goal. It looks worse from the tv angle I expect but wasn't there so don't know. I agree with the wider point. If you're struggling to defend set plays generally then surely back to basics and cover the posts.
