But both parties have to agree to that, yet a Manager can just be given his marching orders..

You can terminate a contract with a player or the manager. In both cases, and unless, they have breached their contract e.g. serious misconduct, and been through disciplinary processes, then you will need to pay off the remainder of their contract. You can also chose not to select the player which avoids the hassle of terminating the contract. Much harder to do with a manager, you can hardly banish him to the U23s. So much easier all round to negotiate a settlement so new manager can get on with the job. [Post edited 22 Nov 2021 20:10]

Usually they're relived of their duties with their contracts continuing until they're sorted at a later date. Theoretically the same could be done with players, indeed something along those lines happens when players are consigned to the U23s etc.

With a massive payoff. It doesn’t seem like there’s that much difference between the two.

"avoids the hassle of terminating the contract" So this is problematic? Not as simple as underperforming I guess?

Terminating contracts takes time and effort, it is a hassle and if there is nothing to be gained financially (you end up paying the full amount), then why bother? Let the play rot in the U23s until contract runs out or you can sell in a transfer window. You also need to think about how sacking a player will impact squad morale (could have been a popular player) and trust (will I be next?). A club that sacks players at its whim rather than through a breach of contract is going to find it hard to recruit and retain good players. Why would I join a club and take the risk of being humiliated?

Have a management team ever been sent on the bomb squad though? Could Ashton consign Cook, Roberts et al to manage the U23s and ask Klug and Dyer to look after the first team?

No. If Cook is not the way forward, then you are not going to give him another role. Those doubting Cook are likely to be proven wrong btw.
