When I was playing as a youngster it was a mark of pride to be able to boot the ball further down the pitch than anyone else. In the pub leagues you'd often see defenders taking the goal kicks if the keeper was a bit of a weedling. The only thought was to get the ball as far away from your own goal as possible. The idea of keepers being able to play football was laughable.

I was a central defender in my day and always had to take the bloody goal kicks for every team I played for. Boot the ball as far as I could then sprint up the pitch so I wasn't playing them onside. It was ruddy knackering and stupid!
