Poll: This new lockdown poll - what you reckon?

That is good news.

Even better if it turns out that Omicron only causes mild illness as has been suggested.

If that is the case is there an argument to let t run rampant and make it the dominant variant?

It is good news, but the way it is reported seems very mixed. Whilst they have gone with a positive headline, the BBC have still managed to then put a negative angle on things with some of the content in the story. Still seems like it is too early to make a proper judgement, but I would like to think/hope that the headline is correct.

No big data study and nothing peer reviewed yet but all the studies seem to say the same thing that it’s more easily caught but milder and that they think the vaccines will keep people out of hospital but they may not be as effective at that as they are with Delta variant.

Splitting your qn into two.

Letting it rip risks increased cases (over now) and hence more in hospital. Given January is winter peak, it could coincide with that which could be bad.

Dont expect harder restrictions but can see existing ones carrying on over xmas/new year.

The bit about letting it become dominant, I don't see how any restrictions differentiate between cv strands. It will become dominant irrespective of restrictions (If more virulent as reported). Restrictions will slow overall growth (or not) of both variants.

That would be good news but the WHO are all over the place on this at the moment.

Pfizer themselves have said that it evades the antibodies [*]. The main thing here is whether it prevents serious illness and fingers crossed it does.

There is also a new strain of Omicron (BA.2) which unfortunately doesn't have the S-gene dropout so it cannot be easily tracked using PCR without genetic analysis like the BA.1 variant could.

It's also got a number of mutations from the BA.1 Omicron so may act differently.

So hopefully looking good on the BA.1 variant, pretty much entirely unknown on the BA.2 variant.

SB

[*] A pre-published study is showing the following for Pfizer:

"Stressing that she has posted only selected findings and a paper hasn’t been presented yet, she has said exposing the blood of vaccinated individuals to different virus variants, she found that the ability to mount an antibody response to Omicron in people who had three shots of BioNTech/Pfizer was up to 37 times lower than the response to Delta."

It's going to become the dominant variant anyway within about a month, however letting it rip might not be a great idea as even though it's milder if we have 200,000 cases a day it's still going to find enough vulnerable to overload the NHS and cause deaths.

There is also the worry that if it's left to go crazy it could mutate into something nastier (which may have happened with the BA.2 variant but we simply don't know - it could also be even milder than the BA.1 variant which would be amazing news).

They are about to announce Plan B this evening apparently, so more restrictions are on the way.

Also the news on Pfizer isn't the best, but needs more data.

Excellent news although it seems to be in contrast with the other study.

They need to get coherent on these messages.

Yes, the maker of a vaccine saying its a good idea to have another dose of it does need to given a little raised eyebrow.

In the same way the 12 person study in South Africa needs a lot of extra data and caution

Good news is booster jabs can now be booked for 3 month gap on the NHS website. Went live this morning.
