Hutton’s right that the budget was inadequate for the many millions who will be facing a tough time, not to mention “austerity by omission” with inflation effectively cutting services and support for those in need.

I found his premise that Britain is much more progressive, fair and generous than that a little hollow. This is business as usual as we say our hands are somehow tied and the market will eventually provide the solution.

If we we were progressive, fair and generous there’d be an opposition tapping into that to argue for higher taxes, greater investment and a better safety net that doesn’t condemn millions (and millions of kids) into an underclass. There’d be journalists like Hutton himself making more of a case too, now and in the past.

Maybe those values exist among ordinary people but in practical, systemic terms they’re lacking from our politics, media and lobbying that are still stuck in a very neoliberal view of the world and the challenges and opportunities facing us.
