Paul Mariner. The Complete Centre Forward. 10:19 - Mar 26 with 635 views | StochesStotasBlewe | For those of us old enough and lucky enough to have seen the great man play for our esteemed club, I will this afternoon be glad to pay homage with all fans of Ipswich and Plymouth to our, in my opinion, finest striker. Let’s raise the roof at 3 o’clock. COYFB. [Post edited 26 Mar 2022 10:19]

| We have no village green, or a shop.
It's very, very quiet.
I can walk to the pub. |

Paul Mariner. The Complete Centre Forward. on 11:05 - Mar 26 with 569 views | ArnieM | When we were trying to sign PM ( I was at the then Ipswich Civic College), and I can remember bombing up to the library everyday to read the paper to see if we’d signed him. We were in very close competition for his signature with West Ham and WBA. I was convinced we wouldn’t get him to come to “ little old Ipswich”. But somehow we did with Terry Austin and John Peddelty going the other way as part of the deal. TA was my next foot neighbour…. Doubt you’d get todays players living amongst us mere mortals these days . He used to drive a VW Beattle in those days lol. Remember going absolutely berserk when PM scored his debut goal vs WBA , when we stuffed em 7-0 …. I think I’ve got that right . The stadium went mental because out if all the goals scored that night Paul Mariners was the one everyone wanted to see happen . Bloody awesome player ! [Post edited 26 Mar 2022 11:06]

Paul Mariner. The Complete Centre Forward. on 11:57 - Mar 26 with 527 views | mylittletown | I think that he might be the most complete English centre forward of my lifetime. Shearer was probably quicker when he was younger, before his injuries, but Mariner was better in the air, and probably more two-footed. I'd have Lewandowski above either of them, but then he was never likely to play for ITFC !

Mariner was a better player than Shearer. End of. I’m not sure he wasn’t better than Lewandowski too. Would the latter have been able to deal with the animals around in Mariner’s time? Doubt it.

I am as misty-eyed as the next man when it comes to ITFC in the 70s. As I said, I think that Mariner was a more complete centre forward than Shearer, but I don't think that it is an 'end of' discussion no brainer. The young Shearer had real pace, and if you were to find a slight weakness with Mariner, he wasn't going to out run many defenders. As for dealing with animals, that applies to any modern player, in the same way as a lack of pace would cause issues in the present day for a lot of 60/70s players, Bobby Moore being a classic example. He wasn’t that slow, but didn’t need to outrun the fastest defenders (there weren’t many anyway). He was all elbows and thighs and they couldn’t get the ball off him. And if they got close, he just played somebody else in. Just watch the FA Cup Final and you’ll see what I’m on about. David O’Leary was one of the quickest around at that time and he never got close. He didn’t very often in future years either. The only player that I saw that came close for that awareness and ability to move opposition around was, in my opinion, Kinsmann. He played at Ipswich once with Spurs. Ok, we weren’t the best, but he was outstanding that night.

Don’t know about that. Shearer’s elbows were far more pointy!
