Messing with player positions. 07:22 - Apr 21 with 1472 viewsFrimleyBlue

It's interesting to read Chaplins post game comments about him learning a new position having always played uptop either solo or in a front 2.

It has seemed over the years at town that we seem to have a lot of players who come in and then we hear that they're not used to playing this way or having to learn a new position.

Is league one a place where this happens alot at other clubs? Or is it our recruitment policies or lack of, over the years that we are using players In an un natural position?

Have we also missed a trick by not seeing a Pigott and Chaplin front line, that big man, small man combo.

It'll be interesting what and who we go for this summer and if the players seeked, come in and play their usual position.

Just thinking from this season. We've had fraser on the left of a 3. Aluko in the middle having spent his days on the wing ( I think) Chaplin as an AM rather than uptop. Morsy learning late in his career in being a box to box midfielder. It's not a major surprise we've lacked that bit of cutting edge when there's alot of in game learning going on.

Almost seems like we buy good players and then just try and squeeze them all in, unnatural positions or not.

I thought Aluko was supposed to be a striker...............

It really does appear to be a bit of a mish-mash.

I hadn't appreciated this was the case with Chaplin, and wondered why quite a few of his attacking passes go astray. But it is clearly understandable if he is not used to the role. Having said that, he was excellent on Tuesday, so maybe he is getting the hang of it.

I think by and large its a result of our haphazard approach to transfers last summer. It looks like Cook went, "I want him" and Ashton, without the benefit of a recruitment team to turn to, (that he has had everywhere else he's been), went "err.....OK"

You've only got to look at poor Louis Barry, and Fraser who signed believing he'd be the 'main man' at no10.

PC shopping went a bit mad didn't it, when you can bring in Barry, Fraser, Celina, Chaplin, Aluko, Edwards, Burns, Morsy, Evans, Caroll etc and then say afterwards " I don't have a 10"

Chappers is a quality player and a natural finisher. I wouldn’t mind him playing up front. He’s the nearest thing to a poacher we’ve got.

Not sure any of them quite compare to Baltacha though, that really was a head scratcher.

No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.

Definite scope for Chappa's to play that "unselfish", lone forward role, imo... Just buzzing around, with purpose and pulling defenders about.. Quite a proven finisher, too.... I think the "big man upfront", approach, quite often plays into the defensive strengths of most L1 sides...
While we are on the subject of goal scorers. I can see Morsy chipping in with 8-10 goals next season. The way he's getting forward, now...
Pity about our set plays.. Or we would have goals coming throughout the team...
Goals throughout the team, is something I'm half expecting next season. Regardless of any striker we might sign....

I do wonder if Hladky is actually a frustrated winger?
