I have a strict no chemicals (I know everything is a chemical, but you know what I mean) rule for my garden. I have a big compost bin which creates excellent soil improver, and the veg patch, which was just sandy soil and LOTS of stone when I created it in 2012, is now a really productive patch with really rich soil.

I'm quite looking forward to doing it again when (if) we finally find a house to buy.

I've only a strip of ground where I am atm but have been pleased with the results I've had so far over the past 3 - 4 years.

At the end of the season I chop down whatever's been growing there and just leave it to rot.

Throw some grass cuttings over the top and add brown leaves once there's enough knocking about through the winter months. Generally I throw veg cuttings on there throughout the winter and then dig it all in when it's soft enough.

Come Spring if it's a bit claggy I distribute a bag of sharp sand throughout to loosen it up a bit and sprinkle a box of chicken pellets and voila. All done.

On a related note, it is likely that all UK households will have a dedicated food waste collection (ie not mixed with garden waste) in the next few years, and there are two reasons for this.

1) to drive waste up the hierarchy and reduce landfill etc.
2) to add much needed organic matter to our agricultural land (through the digestate that comes out of the back end of the AD process) as our land is getting degraded at an unsustainable rate.

Why has vegetable waste been no longer allowed in with garden waste?

I don't know if that's everywhere but it's not been allowed where my old mum lives for some time now.

A number of reasons really. First off, it's not an efficient way to collect it (financially as much as anything) as very little food is collected that way, and the treatment for food and garden mixed is twice as expensive as for garden waste only. Secondly, the few facilities that accepted the food and garden waste mixed no longer operate in Suffolk.

The mix of garden and food was something that was initially introduced in a lot of council areas (nationally) in the 00s, and the last 15-20 years have largely shown that it is not effective as a collection system.

I could bore you with stats, but I'll hold off for now!

See, I don't know these things.

I assumed anything organic like carrot peelings, outer cabbage leaves etc would simply be mulched up with all other garden waste and be turned into compost.

I tried to argue, (wrongly it turns out!), with my mother that it was because people were thinking food waste as literally all food waste and were chucking stuff like meat fat, bones etc in there which would contaminate the lot.

So are we using the word 'food' here meaning foodstuff in general or are we counting vegetable cuttings too?

improving the soil, reducing energy input, making the soil an effective carbon sink - all are critically important and need to happen.

but 9 people working 15 hectares, a third of which are fallow in any single year, implies that either food needs to be much more expensive, or those 9 people are going to be very low paid.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

Or simply redistribute the land among the people and they can all take of their plots themselves.

And those who are in need of assistance naturally.

I'll have a goat and some chickens. Maybe a few pigs.

I do still like steak so will need a neighbour to trade with, and for milk and of course cheese.

In fact if I specialise in one or two types of vegetables then others can focus on doing the same, then we can swap to make our foodstuff interesting and fulfilling.

For any shortfall we could introduce some kind of tokens which could be exchanged for other amenities at another time.

We're onto something.

That distinction between veg waste and all food waste is a critical point. If it was just veg peelings etc, and you could guarantee that it hadn't been near meat in the kitchen, then it could go to the lower tech and lower cost treatment. But it's a tricky message to convey, and the animal by-product regs (post mad cow disease) means that treatment facilities have to work on the assumption that if the food has been in the kitchen, then it could have come into contact with meat.

The separate food collections that I mentioned are coming will be for all food, including meat, plate scrapings etc. They will go to a dedicated food waste treatment (anaerobic digestion) that can cope with the meat etc due to the heat and process involved.

allotments can be incredibly productive per acre. but much less productive in terms of someone's time. so you'll need to persuade everyone that that's how they want to use their leisure time. i'm in, but it may not be for everyone.

Hmm, right. So the next problem is going to be protecting what we produce from those who can't be bothered themselves.

That will mean we need to stick together as a group. We'll need some kind of universal dress sense so we can immediately recognise each other from the, (let's call them the enemy for the sake of simplicity), weapons...

Maybe elect a leader, introduce some policies to convince others to join our cause.

I'm sort of still on board at this point but not sure where it might be going.

So following treatment all of this matter gets reused as natural fertilizer?
