A few thoughts from yesterday 11:14 - Aug 14 with 1246 views | bracknell_blue | Having had time to digest the game yesteray (sleep being seemingly optional in this weather) I have a few observations and questions. 1. Did we make MK look poor or did they make us look good? Or a mix of the two. They certainly disappointed me (fortunately) but we didn't let them play their usual style much. 2. A lot of fans seem to make certain players the scapegoat. Seems to be Evans at the moment, but I thought he was vfery good again yesterday. He was always in space to receive the ball, whether from the CBs, from wide, from Morsy or from the attacking players. Whether MK just didn't bother marking him or he is good at finding space I don't know, but altough he did misplace a few passes, he is the one player in our midfield with the vision to pick out a pass and (usually) play it. But don't get me started on his corners - not that Chaplin's were that much better, especially the one that went straight into the side netting. 3. Davis had so much space in the first half he must have been wondering if he had forgotten to use deodorant when he got up. Really stretched their defending, but the amount of space did make me wonder about MK's tactics. 4. Walton is ridiculously good for this level, and his calmness and confidence must inspire those in front of him. And he, like both Edmundson and Evans, was not afraid to give Woolfie the benefit of his opinion loudly after he was a bit too casual. One such incident even got a very icy stare from JD! 5. Which brings me to JD. We all speak about his consistency, a 7/10 every game. Yesterday he was inconsistent, as he was at least a 9/10. Absolute star, sometimes he makes the game look so easy. 6. Still no goals from our strikers, but you can see we have a much greater goal threat from midfield than we have had for years so I can't say I am that bothered for now. But another striker is needed as keeping Ladapo and Jackson fir all season is a big ask. More performances like that will be much welcomed, but some teams will park the bus more - MK susrprised me, though, with how deep they played, really isolating their striker who, as a result, was reluctant to press our CBs as he would then have needed binoculars to spot his nearest team mate at times.

As said before. You ensure the likes of Chaplin get in and around the box he will score goals. And harness is a forward more than a 10. Remember we don't play formations we play roles. Ladapo is the ball holder to bring others around him into the play. He will get on the end of things soon but even when he's not scoring you're not missing a striker. You're waiting for the others to do their job. ( something that was missing on tuesday) What we do need is another ladapo type stroker.. not this apparent 20 plus goal scorer as imo you get the wrong signing and you undo all the hard work going on with harness and Chaplin.

To be fair, the pitch in that corner was crumbling away under his standing foot. By the time he’d taken the third one the white line was gone and it was just dust left.

It depends how we define a "striker". Does it have to be strictly limited to the No. 9, or can we use that descriptor for the whole front three? Are Chaplin and Harness showing up Ladapo, or they all working together as a unit to get the ball into the net? I think it might be time for some different thinking (and adapted terminology) with the way McKenna has Town operating.

I think what we’re seeing this season already is more players in the box on 12:53 - Aug 14 with 880 views | unstableblue |

Even under McKenna we never got enough bodies in the box… that seems to be changing But as you rightly point out it’s a forward three… and I think that’s why McKenna was so pleased with the less attractive goal 2 yesterday as it was a striker picking up a rebound in the box

Man City's leading striker last year was De Bruyne (a midfielder) with 15. We're obviously not at their level but they shared the goals around last season, and I think the same will be true of us, given the way we are set up. This statistic perhaps goes to show that the "we need a 20 goal a season striker" demand is not necessarily correct. [Post edited 14 Aug 2022 13:25]
