The plague of housebuilding 19:53 - Aug 23 with 977 views | NthQldITFC | https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/aug/23/englands-housing-strategy-wo The building of new homes under a business as usual scenario, coupled with current trends on making existing homes more efficient, would mean the housing system would use up 104% of the country’s cumulative carbon budget by 2050. Radically retrofitting existing houses, cutting the number of second homes, stopping people from buying houses as financial investments and making people live in smaller buildings would be more sustainable ways to address the housing crisis, the paper says. Another fallacy just like the 'growth' mantra. The amount of housebuilding round my way, the increased traffic, pollution and noise. It just all has to stop.

The plague of housebuilding on 21:34 - Aug 23 with 837 views | CoachRob | I think improvements to social housing is a must to protect those households from the inflationary effects of climate change and degrading energy/material inputs. Josh Ryan-Collins is an author on this paper and certainty has a good understanding of monetary dynamics. It would be interesting to understand to what extent higher income households would use the efficiency savings on their bill to increase consumption. Emily Shuckburgh mentioned in her briefing to MP's about how efficiency gains in cars had lead to increased car use and a classic Jevons Paradox backfire effect. There are quite a few authors in that paper (e.g. Jason Hickel) that favour degrowth and there was an exergy conference at Cambridge that tried to get in the weeds on some of the thermodynamics. I just feel you end up at Maxwell's Demon or benevolent dictators with these ideas - I hope I'm wrong.

| And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show |

But at the same time we know exactly how this: "making people live in smaller buildings would be more sustainable ways to address the housing crisis" Would be interpreted and how it would be applied in effect. The poorest who already live in the smallest spaces would be expected to compensate for those in larger homes and be just that bit more cramped in. Already social new builds incorporate the kitchens in with the living areas. Maybe the next phase could stick the bathroom in with the bedroom. Not en suites of course, but more 'open plan' or something.

They are sustainable. There is enough space, though not much in this very crowded (relatively) country. Other things are not sustainable, but housing in reasonable environments is pretty crucial to human wellbeing imo, and entirely doable if we do not keep encouraging significant population growth.
