Our new Energy minister doesn't believe in Climate Change and wants to ramp up oil and gas whilst cutting back on wind.

Absolutely. Flying being the main example of that dissonance in behaviour. We've stopped flying unless absolutely necessary (and it hasn't been in 4-5 years now). Even though we're surrounded by colleagues who research climate change, most of them look at us like we've 2 heads when we say we won't use flights to go on holiday. Although there's a conference coming up in NZ soon that'll test the resolve! |  |

It is a fascinating time to work in the industry, and I think what people haven’t got their heads around yet is that our energy consumption is likely to near enough double by 2050 (with the decarbonisation of heat and transport) in most of National grid’s future energy scenarios and so some of the problems we will experience this winter are not one-offs.
National Grid are looking to procure volume from the demand side in a specific service this winter (I.e. households and businesses using less electricity at time of need) and that is a window into the kind of thinking that enables a net-zero grid. |  | | |
