A fine individual goal in the first half left KMc, and the players facing a stearn test.

My immediate thought was it was going to be like Lincoln & Cheltenham games that saw us drop 5 points.

v Lincoln 77% possession 33 shots 5 on target
v Cheltenham 75% possession 31 shots 4 on target
v Wycombe 71% possession 20 shots 6 on target

While we are joint top goal scorers, joint highest positive goal difference and only five teams have conceded fewer goals we need more examples of individual flair if we are to gain automatic promotion.

Wycombe played exactly how everyone expected we just lacked to guile to break them down. We will face many more games like this before the season ends just need to find the key to unlock stubborn defences.

At least two from Derby, Barnsley & Bolton will join the race for the automatic promotion points, we don't want to be facing the play offs. A good win, on Boxing Day, against a team that could easily have beaten Sheffield Wednesday is important.

Today was exactly the same pattern as Lincoln except, against the Imps, we at least put pressure and they were reliant on last gasp blocks and saves to keep us at bay. We did very little today when 1-0 down and that's the most disappointing thing. It feels like a real backwards step.

Town maybe looked a bit jaded today. 9 days before the next game is no bad thing. Hopefully no new injuries & some players returning to fitness.
The next game will mark halftime in the season & I do think we need a little more up front, with John-Jules probably not returning, if we are to ensure automatic promotion. I couldn't bear playing someone like Wycombe in the play off semi final.

Now that the league has settled down after 20 games, today was the first time we had been away to one of the 'chasing pack'. While we have already been to Plymouth and Sheff Wed (picking up 1 point from 6) and so have to play them at home there are a lot of trip to those in the play-off spots still to come.

We have already played Barnsley, Bolton, Derby, Peterborough & Portsmouth at Portman Road and still have to play all of them away. A lot of tough games in there so we need to do better at turning possession into goals and points in these bigger games.

I'm not sure that we "lack individual flair"- Edwards in particular- the issue, for me is a lot more simple.
There are two main issues:

1. We don't move the ball upfield quickly enough in transition, which means teams get numbers back against us.

2. Our players are too static in and around the area. The opposition can then simply match up and block. There was one glorious exception when Burns cut across (I can't remember who had the ball for us ) out to the right of the box and three defenders all went with him. The ball was laid off for a shot from the edge of the area, which sadly was to close to the keeper.

That is what is needed, quick transitions and players making runs that commit defenders and draw them out of position.

The first point is very noticeable. I wonder if we could allow the opposition more of the ball to entice them forwards in greater numbers which might allow us to hit on the break. The only issue with that is we don't actually seem very good at defending!
