Kennel cough 11:23 - Jan 31 with 912 viewsclive_baker

My dog seems to have it, anyone got any advice?

Trying to arrange a visit to the vet but in the meantime what I've read is to basically not walk her very far.

Get meds for the vet, keep her quiet and away from other dogs

and give her a big hug from me and perhaps a nice chewy treat

Rest. Avoid unnecessary exercise (reduce food accordingly)
If she is off her food or mucky nasal discharge, get vet advice.
It will run a course 7-10 days if she is otherwise healthy.

Are you sure it is kennel cough? Has she contacted other coughing dogs recently or mixed in larger groups?
Other possibilities include lungworm. Do you worm her regularly?
If she is older (>7-8 depending on breed) then early heart failure could be an issue but you'd have clues like she's been more lethargic recently.
Most kennel cough sorts itself but do get advice if she stops eating, nasty discharge, not getting better in a week.

Thanks for this, very helpful.

She went into kennels a fortnight ago and based on what I've read it can take that long for symptoms to display which has me thinking kennel cough, but I'm not 100% sure. She's wheezy, coughing, generally lethargic and off her food. Vet has asked for a video which I've sent over so will see what they say.

Kennel cough is a highly contagious respiratory infection in dogs. Here are some steps you can take:

Visit the vet: It's best to get a professional diagnosis and proper treatment plan.

Isolation: Keep your dog isolated from other dogs to prevent the spread of the illness.

Rest: Provide a quiet and comfortable area for your dog to rest and recover.

Hydration: Encourage your dog to drink water to help relieve symptoms.

Medication: Your vet may prescribe antibiotics or cough suppressants to help relieve symptoms.

Avoid triggers: Avoid exposing your dog to things that may worsen symptoms, such as smoke or dust.

Vaccination: Consider vaccinating your dog against kennel cough to prevent future outbreaks.

Note: These tips are not a substitute for veterinary care. It's always best to consult with a professional for the best course of treatment for your pet.

Sorry to hear that, once a diagnosis has confirmed it, might be an idea to give forum users an area of say 5 sq miles to avoid……

Was she innoculated against KC in her annual booster?

Has she drunk from waterbowl/s outside which slugs or snails might have accessed? (relevant re. lungworm).

No other advice to add on top of the specific excellent stuff already on the thread.
