Anyone under the age of 50 needs to be planning to fund their own retirement. If there is any meaningful state pension for us then it will be a bonus.

I'm sure most of the Tories would love it if most people never got to retire. Relying on the peanuts they are paid and then they die quicker. Probably win win for them.

Truly impaired.

I wouldn't bother if I were you.

In forty years' time you'll all be rummaging around in the irradiated ruins of Western Europe. Only the nuclear winter will stop you dying of dehydration or sunstroke as a consequence of rising temperatures.

Although the radiation sickness will be a horrible way to go.

I'm just offering my most positive scenario for the next half-century.

It'll probably be worse.

Tbh, people have always been advised to do that. The state pension is a bit of a last resort and people should be aiming to top up if they want any sort of retirement. A lot easier said than done though when you need to save up a gazillion pounds for a deposit on a bedsit from your £11/hr, self employed, zero hours contract.

If you want to get more depressed have a look at the latest Panorama on the wage/productivity problem. Nothing new, but a sad reminder of the state we’re in and likely to be in for some time. Things are changing slowly though - even the Beeb is now openly criticising the role Brexit is playing in all this. Hopefully people will start to demand more from our government soon and we can vote in a party that can start to undo the damage.

Not having a dig but that is just daft isn't it? We've always been advised to save for a pension? No sh1t. What does that have to do with the point? The state pension might be a 'last resort' but it's £9627 a year. If that suddenly wasn't available then many pensioners will be absolutely screwed. Of course we should aim to save plenty for retirement but many pensioners have little more than the state pension and with the younger generations looking likely to have far less wealth then the state pension becomes even more important.

As you say, it's much easier said than done to be able to retire without it. The fact is, if it's taken away, or more likely watered down, then a lot of people will be working until the day they die.
