We've become used to the American Gun Cult 06:17 - Apr 12 with 631 views | Pendejo | https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-65234314 So not a lot new here.... Until this "Meanwhile, the legally purchased AR-15-style rifle used by the killer will probably be auctioned to the public, officials say. Under current state law, guns confiscated by local police - including those used in homicides - are returned to state police and then made available for purchase at auction." Do they advertise them as such to drive up the prices, I wonder? [Post edited 12 Apr 2023 6:18]

Why waste a good assault rifle when it could be used to kill again?

But their slavish devotion to them is freakish, cultish and almost pornographic. You only need to take a look at the American film industry to see how they worship the things. As for assault rifles, their only purpose is killing people. If they can't do full on sensible gun control for fear of upsetting the gun lobby, they very least they should do is get rid of those things from the public domain.

Thing is, certain elements feel they need military-grade weapons to protect themselves from the federal government (and the state one, if not to their taste). As if rifles would actually save them in the unlikely scenario that the armed forces were ordered to suppress individualism. But the rugged, self-reliant frontiersman fantasy is still strong. Also a much larger number of Americans have served in the forces and wish to keep up the feeling they are defending the nation by being heavily armed. Even today films are full of plotlines where the ex-military guy comes out of retirement to save the day (with much expenditure of ammunition). That's another powerful fantasy when you've gone from being part of well-resourced and internationally respected army to living in a rural trailer home doing a job with few prospects.
