Suffolk is a beacon of hope for the future. 19:49 - May 5 with 1587 viewsNthQldITFC

Not only do we have a magnificent football club, headed for the top, but...

Three out of our four non-metropolitan local government districts were won by the Green party, and one of them is the first local authority in the Northern hemisphere to be under Green majority control!

I know it's only local elections and the Green party aren't perfect, but hopefully it's a sign that people are finally waking up to the really important issues we will increasingly be facing on local, national and international scales in the coming years. Hopefully some of this will be carried forward into the GE particularly in the young voters, even though we don't have a PR system to make it count. (Sorry Harry, please don't bite my possibly ignorant head off!)

Apologies for reproducing the results here, but I thought it might be handy to see them all in one place if you haven't been following the thing.

Mid Suffolk (34 seats)
Green.....24 (big overall majority)
Cons.........6
Lib Dem....4

East Suffolk (55 seats)
Green.....16
Cons.......15
Lab.........12
Lib Dem..11
Others......1

Babergh (32 seats)
Green.....10
Others......9
Cons.........7
Lib Dem....5
Lab...........1

COME ON YOU GREENS!

As much as I would like to interpret the results as you have, I fear the reality is that recently arrived Londoners are exhibiting a group case of Nimbyism and will eventually move to Norfolk (except for the Waveney hippies of course)

I've been thinking about why this might be and I reckon I kno why.

East Suffolk -> Sizewell C
Babergh and Mid Suffolk -> Supersized pylons marching through the countryside.

I live in East Suffolk, in a place that will be directly effected by Sizewell C. I and the 3 others in the household voted for the person that would most likely beat the incumbent tory.

Sizewell wasn't much our my minds at all. In fact the person we voted for (a libDem) was pretty vague in her election leaflet on her attitude to Sizewell.

We may of course be outliers, but Sizewell wasn't a huge issue to us.

It's ok for the wealthy, and professional class people voting the greens into power. It's the regular Joes who will have their lives crushed, or at least all the joy sucked out because they aren't allowed nice things any more.

meat
motorised transport
foreign travel
warm & well lit houses

all either heavily restricted or taxed to the point only the well off can enjoy them.

Bet they wont even fix the potholes.

So, no difference from the Tories pricing people out of nice things and not fixing potholes then?

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.

Look, I know that this victory is in essence symbolic, and what I'm about to type can very well be characterised as 'pie-in-the-sky' thinking, but unless we change our entire economic system and way of thinking from top to bottom, WE ARE F**KED!

We need a massive social and economic revolution with redistribution of 'wealth' based on need not on greed, and we need it fking fast. Tired old ways of thinking - at the top of society and at the bottom of society - need to be smashed aside and replaced to give us a chance, so rejoicing at a green swing, whatever the reason and whatever the consequences, makes sense.

"Oh, it won't work, I'm not giving up my Benetton and they're not giving up their Bentleys" - fk that stuck in the mud sh*t, why not be brave and give it a try, there's nothing to lose.
