Those, who know their euro politics.

If Lukashenko dies, does another pro Russia 'puppet' instantly get installed?

Or is there a chance of the more west leaning opposition getting a goin an Election ?

I think the simple answer is “Don’t know”, Putin was the only thing holding up Lukashenko at one time but it depends on the power structure within the security forces. Far too much guilt for some of them to want a change if regime but hard to know how strong they are.

Popular opinion in Belarus was very anti-Lukashenko before popular protests were crushed with great brutality a few years back.

I think they just pull him in half and another, smaller one pops out ready to take his place.

According to the constitution, the Prime Minister assumes the president's powers until a new election is held. The whole process will be controlled by the same people who helped Lukashenko win, so it's likely to be a continuation of his regime.

It might be the signal for a coup. Those backing this old b'stard may well see which way the wind is blowing and either hop over the border or attempt to fade into the background.

It will certainly not be in Putins interest to see Belarus break from Russia, and it's remaining may well depend upon how many Russian 'advisors' are serving with the Belarusian armed forces.

It could quickly collapse, as with 1990

Belarus is Russia. The badge and what passes as a constitution may say otherwise, but they are one country, one big happy family.

If Putin wants a tin of beans installed as President, Mr Branston will be installed with a 99.8% approval rating regardless of whether the fodder gets a vote.

Putin has used this war to crush internal opposition, but you are right - it could quickly unravel and collapse. Here’s hoping.

Agreed. Putin will not allow Belarus to move away. If anything, there may be a presidential "candidate" who proposes a more formal union with Russia.

Lukashenko has always been too independently minded for Putin's liking. Ironically, he may have been the thing preserving his country's independence. Tho the election and subsequent protests forced him to rely upon Moscow more than he would probably have liked.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?
