How Times Change 06:33 - Jun 13 with 1706 viewsChurchman

I was at Canterbury yesterday watching Kent V Surrey in the sunshine. I had a little walk round the perimeter in the afternoon, Ipswich Town bucket hat firmly on head to ward off the rays, when I was hailed by a stranger.

He was an ITFC season ticket holder and we proceeded to have a lovely 20 minute conversation about the club during which he broke the good news about Chaplin’s new contract, while the cricketers toiled in the heat.

I was thinking how different it is now. Three years ago I’d have worn an ITFC had, but if asked about it any conversation with anyone would have started with sadness, a wry grin and a ‘we’re a bit cr@p’ etc.

Now, pride and hope restored.

Absolutely and as a Kent supporter too I would have loved to have been there with you too to watch an all too rare good day for the Spitfires. It is quite astonishing how far and wide the legacy of the Robson era has reached nationwide but sad it has been largely dormant for so many years!

I follow the Spitfires too but they have been struggling all season. They just don’t have the resources of the clubs like Surrey. The St Lawrence ground is lovely. Even the new flats don’t impinge on it too much, unlike say Worcester whose once-lovely New Road ground has been destroyed by the dirty great Premier Inn that’s been built on one corner of it. Hove is quite nice and I like the Aegis (Rise) Bowl, but the latter is an absolute swine to get to.

Back to the football club, our identity was wrecked by Evans and the bankruptcy that preceded it but the Robson/Ramsey years have a long reach fortunately. Add in a stylish last season and a club moving forward and I look forward to chats with people I bump into now rather than getting depressed and hoping they move on to another topic.

Yeah agree about Canterbury, lovely setting for cricket, been a few times but not often enough tbh.... seen Kent at Chelmsford for T20s quite a few times and although the atmosphere is always spicy there it's not the same as the beautiful setting at The St Lawrence Ground.

Not been to Chelmsford strangely, as it’s one of the closer ones. I will in the next year or two, I’m sure.

I used to do Surrey Kent 20/20 at the Oval with work colleagues for a number of years - a really big p£&# up of a day with 50+ others. The congregation would assemble at the George near London Bridge at lunchtime, drink all afternoon, rock over to the Oval for a late afternoon start and a few beers then back to the Mad Hatter near Blackfriars Bridge for a few finishers. Mental, but fun.

I like cricket days. Total chillax.

That will be an epic, if dangerous to the liver, day!

Staying in Blackpool for a couple of days to watch Lancashire v somebody in July. Should be a laugh.

It’s Lancs v Essex. I hope the weather’s kind.

Ta. It’s the one thing you have no control over. Had a ticket a few years ago for West Indies v S Africa World Cup game at Hampshires ground. Got down there and the day was a washout. The only one of the competition. By and large though I’ve been lucky with the weather at cricket.

I booked four days at Scarborough a few years ago to watch Yorkshire v Essex. Beautiful ground, great weather ... but Essex (in the shape of Mohammed Amir and Jamie Porter) saw off Yorkshire in under two days. And then I was in Scarborough with digs paid for and nothing to do. So I hope you've got the first two days.

Yes, first two days! As you say, these things often don’t go the distance!

I'm hoping to be at the game myself. I'm an Essex member, but much prefer the away games.

I miss the days of the Colchester festival, can remember one year standing in the heat for an age to buy an ice lolly but spent the entire time chatting to Derek Pringle, when he was still playing. He got the short straw and was buying for the team.

He was huge too

No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.
Poll: If someone promised you promotion next season, would you think

I miss Colchester hugely, - not only the Castle Park but even the Garrison A ground. (The latter would still make a great site for a large cricket 'stadium'.)
