McKenna post match and more thoughts on the game 08:12 - Oct 4 with 2143 viewsDyland

“I said it last year and we went through that process of helping them understand that that’s a big part of the reason why we’re such a threat high up the pitch because of the bravery of the boys at the back.

“We looked at a moment with the group against Cardiff where we lost the ball deep in build-up and the reaction of the team was fantastic and Vaz ended up making a really good save as the striker tried to round him.

“I showed the players because you could see on the camera that what happened was five or six of the supporters stood up and started applauding.

“And for me that was a really good sign and a good moment and a sign that the understanding is there, the empathy is there with the players and what they’re trying to do, and how hard and how much work it takes to execute and the fact that it’s not always going to be right, but we’ve got to stick together with it.

“That was a good sign and it showed in the second goal tonight, the bravery, and then the execution to go right the way through the pitch and finish the move off in such good style.

“A really good goal for us, I thought we had quite a few moves really that were really, really top end and it was great to finish that one off.”

Bravo! Man crush on this bloke, he's so fooking good and always gets the balance of tone right in his analysis.

We'll eventually concede from being too brave/silly (delete as appropriate if you're a positive encouraging fan or a negative grump), as does every team even the silly good ones, but teams concede almost directly from long balls from the back as well. The point is, as has been written oft, we will gain more points than we drop by playing like this and it's a net positive.

How fackin good were we last night? The first half was ridiculous. Brilliant. I liked Hull, thought they were positive and kept to their plan, but came up against a form team when everything pretty much clicked. Our passing through the pitch and movement was ridiculously good, as was the press. Hirst must have needed an oxygen tent after that.

Hull are no mugs. Shows that when teams go toe to toe with Town atm they will need a) a top class strike force a la Leeds (and Leicester from watching their game v Blackburn) and b) Town to have a brain fart for a spell (again, a la Leeds). Sh1t happens innit, and as McKenna says, Saturday will be a different beast entirely. Ya can't rule out frustration in footy. Win draw or lose the next one, you gotta not worry and enjoy the moments when they come.

First half as good as anything since Burley, as a few have commented. I'm really reticent about strong and emotive adjectives when it comes to the game of football, I mean, are you really disgusted? Is it actually a disgrace? It's a game ffs. However, I am actually proud being a Town supporter this morning. Not in a bumptious crowing way. Just... I don't know... inwardly proud and happy.

Agree with every word of that.

Was going to start a thread on Hirst, but I'll add to your point here. The bloke is an incredible athlete isn't he? Never stops running, quite pacy, outmuscles all opponents. And you add the fact that he is a very tidy footballer too - he was excellent last night. Keep playing as he is and I'm confident he'll get 15 plus goals this season, but he'll add far more than that from his all round play.

On the defensive point, I thought it was telling how much control we kept (until the last ten minutes anyway). Hull had one real chance and even that involved a fortunate bounce after we dealt with their initial break well.

That's a big step up from the previous three home matches, all of which we've had some less than good defensive moments. Leeds was, as you say, a brain fart for 15 minutes and the other two less so.

Add in the use of the squad with both Harness and Edmundson really stepping up and the positives from last night keep coming.

Spot on! When he leaves the pitch, he looks like someone that has just done ten rounds with Mike Tyson. I don't think you can understate how important that is in trying to help turn over possession when we are a team which relies on having the ball at our feet. He really is class.

Harness did one really duff attempted cushion lay off that spinned out for a throw but did far more right, technically. Quite surprising! He played very well and has a great engine innit. Also very pleasing to see Edmundsen look so, well, unrusty. Shiny innit!

Such a menace and pain to play against, it must leave the defenders exhausted, mentally if not physically.

He really is. Our system simply doesn't work without that centre forward role being executed like he does. His press from the front, his positioning to block off the outballs into midfield, his ability to hold it up in possession and use the ball well. It's a perfect example of why he shouldn't be judged solely on goals. I think he has a couple to his name already and hopefully hits double figures, but an assist last night and an all round display that was superb. He's a big cog in that side, and it's often his work and front post runs that create the space for the likes of Chaplin and Broadhead to capitalise.

I think Williams makes a difference too. He's a quality footballer, if a little hot headed at times. I didn't like him trying to win the ball through the back of their player in the box at 3-0, pretty silly challenge to try and make but aside from that he was superb. Especially defensively and positionally where he has the edge over Clarke IMO.

I couldn't believe we had Harness in the starting 11 with Hutchinson and Broadhead on the bench but he was great last night. Fully deserved his goal. Edmundson too was a brave and inspired decision. Was such a great game. I don't think anyone has mentioned Burns either. Great to have him back in the goals.

I'd love him to get a goal on Saturday. He possibly needs a goal sooner rather than later, for himself... but if he continues to play as he did and create space and put pressure on the oppo defending from the front, he's worth his place, cos we will score goals where he has been integral. Of course, we can say this more easily when we win...

Glad it didn't smack into the defender, mind :)

Chapln's goal and the build up! Actual lol.

Wolf's tackle on the edge of our box when he nicked the ball and carried it ten yards and set up an attack! Pure instinct and confidence in his technique. Such fackin good coaching basically.

That would be nice. He scored against Blackburn, and on the opening day, so that's 2 goals in 8 starts. 1 in 4 would see him to double figures. I would love to see him hit a purple patch, but if we're winning and playing like that I don't care who scores.

A few other very good teams, and more importantly clubs with deep squads. We shall see if the footballing gods are with us for once, cos with a fair wind at our backs we're a match for anyone. Main concern is how irreplaceable Morsy seems to be, him and Luongo together are as good as having an extra midfielder in there.

As commented elsewhere there are still fans who need to get with it ffs.

It's the same as the fans who constantly moan and yell negative bile at our own players, even when the team are performing well. I swear they go to games just to get annoyed.
