Last year we were playing Fleetwood and Morecombe. This year we were playing Leeds and Leicester with >£100m teams.

I don’t think we learned much tonight other than reaffirming the drop off in quality outside the first team. We already knew the likes of Ball, and Ladapo would likely need upgrading, and I’m sure the club will move quickly in Jan.

Last season we went on a dreadful run starting on Dec 17th: LWDDDLWDDD. The last of the sequence was the famous match at Bristol Rovers.

So similar time of year too. That's encouraging given how things turned out.

Well, we brought in 4 players in January who were better than what we had. While we have made massive strides, if an automatic promotion challenge is to be sustained, we need to do the same again this season.

Or perhaps bringing in as good as what we have lost through unavailability would be all that is needed for an automatic promotion challenge! There is a good likelihood that the other top sides will be under pressure to sell and have players unhappy to stay. They may well lose some good players to international tournaments too. It is going to be very interesting who we do get in, though.

We also had a local derby and a game against a team fighting for their lives. Last season December and New Years Day we played Fleetwood (1-1), P’Boro (2-1), Wycombe (0-1), Oxford (3-0), Portsmouth (2-2), Lincoln (1-1). 9 points.

This season we’ve played 7 games since 2/12 and taken 12 points against opposition which bears no comparison. It’s been a gruelling run of games.

You are right, we have a drop off beyond the first team plus two or three and that is something we already knew. Roll on January 2nd when the fixtures ease out a bit.

I don't think we'll see four first teamers come in, doubt we could afford that anyway - unless it includes a bit of squad padding.

But three might be enough.

Also, we’re unlikely to be as unlucky as to lose (arguably) our 5 best players for one match at the same time again.

We are in a much stronger position to sign players than we were in the summer. I suspect we will get at least 3 first choice players or at least genuine competition for them but we will see.
