Have we had a TWTD 'favourite albums of 2023 thread in the last week or so? 14:43 - Jan 3 with 622 viewsBlueBadger

I don't recall seeing one, so Imma start one.

5-4(in no particular order)

5. Dodheimsgard - Black Medium Current.

Super weird black metal from Denmark. Think Rammstein, only proggy and bonkers.

4. Margo Price - Strays

Alt-country with a healthy injection of psychedelia and garage rock.

3. Holly Humberstone - Paint My Bedroom Black.

Someone at a record company sent an angsty late-teen singer-songwriter to LA to work with 'top producers' and make pop bangers. Instead she made an album of immaculately crafted angsty songs with a superb pop sheen.

2. Eparapo - Take To The Streets

Uber funky Afrobeat with a healthy dose of reggae, too.

1. Sleep Token - Take Me Back To Eden

Flavour of the month for metal kids, but by 'eck, if you dig it, you REALLY dig it's blend of riffs, R&B and soul stylings.

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.

Sleep Token seem to be getting a lot of love in year end lists. I find them a bit baffling tbh, bland, saccharine and a bit soulless.

My favourite album was Desolations Flower by Ragana. Raw, punishing and passionate black metal tinged grunge from a Canadian female duo

The rest of my top 5 would be
End by Explosions in the Sky
Unicorn by Gunship
In the End it Always does by The Japanese House
Solace by REZN

Keeping it to albums only and not individual tracks, who has caught your ear this year?

Be good to hear what medium you choose too.

I only purchase vinyl, but listen to streamed music most days, so not sniffy about it. I've always just preferred vinyl.

For me in no particular order:

Gaz Coombes - Turn the car around
A Certain Ratio - 1982
Noel Gallagher - Council skies
White Label - Other Voices
Matt Deighton - Today Become Forever
Say She She - Silver

My favourite reissue of the the year was Who's Next by The Who. I got the 4LP version featuring a live gig from 71. Sublime.

Looking forward?

The upcoming LP by English Teacher.

Distortion becomes somehow pure in its wildness.

I've been pretty poor at seeking out new music for a long time. But I came across this late in 2023 and am really enjoying it. An excellent fusion of styles.

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

For various reasons I've not actually listened to much new music this year, but I particularly enjoyed these:

Avenged Sevenfold - Life is but a dream
Jason Isbell and the 400 unit- Weathervanes
Creeper - Sanguivore

if remasters are allowed:
Drive-by truckers - The Complete Dirty South
