Forty years ago today: Ipswich Town 3–1 Coventry City 11:29 - Feb 4 with 2061 viewsMiaow

Jason Dozzell, on as a first-half substitute for Eric Gates, scored on his ITFC début at the age of just 16 years and 57 days, making him the youngest goalscorer in English top-flight history. His record, of course, still stands.

Paul Mariner netted the opening goal on what was his final appearance for the club. Mark Brennan got the other.

Who here was among the 13,406 in attendance?

Yup, I was. As a Chantry boy (couple of years above him), we’d know he was going to be a footballer from an early age, but to get picked at that age was something, but also showed the thin squad we had then, that did well to avoid relegation for 2 seasons until the inevitable happened in 86’. Still, it was a good news story at the time, back to school on Monday etc. In the team of 92’ JD was an experienced pro at 24!

I was there, and was also class of 84 at Chantry.

Not gonna claim to ever being best mates with Jason, but in many ways that's probably the nearest I will get to a family member scoring for Town.

Monday 's school assembly from the headmaster, Mr. Shepherd, was all about how excited he was for him.

As was our custom we watched most of the game from West stand and moved to North when gates opened just before end of game, so were behind the goal into which he scored. Unsurprisingly our group was probably twice it's usual size for this as some of his mates, who didn't usually attend, joined us for this. I think one or two got on the pitch to celebrate with him.

I remember Coventry being ultra physical, (our old friend Fat Sam Allardyce was involved) as they were looking to force an equaliser. Mariner was crocked for a lot of the seond half and was hobbling around but couldn't come off as we'd made our sub. Plenty of fan anger at that point, so when Dozell got his goal it was a big release as it made the game safe and of course joy for young Dozzer, think the goal was quite late on. Not surprised that it was Mariner's last game for us given his injury. We always had a pretty thin squad, even in the glory years, Brennan was a good addition but a bit lightweight and Putney was limited but perfect for Norwich where he ended up. We did miss Brazil and and the Dutch guys and O'callaghan was never a proper fit. Looking at the player ages I was suprised how young the average age still was; the back line averaged only 25, the oldest guys, Cooper and Mariner were 30. The only aging player we had and moved on was Micky Mills and that was a mistake as he had plenty of life left in him as he proved when he joined Southampton. We were short of money but there was still the making a good side if strengthened with the odd canny freebie particularly in midfield. We went for the wrong Ferguson, Bobby Ferguson was not the right choice and it's a shame the Cobbolds didn't chase Alex Ferguson harder, though I doubt he would have left Aberdeen as they were flying at the time.

Yes, as i remember Mariner getting a rib injury but the sub had already been made so he trotted about on the right wing holding his ribs for most of the second half.

40 years, wow. I was there, West Stand Lower (terrace) right up by the North. In that era, that part of the West had quite a few what I think would be called bouncy lads these days. I was 13 and a wannabe casual. Suffice to say I would have sh*t myself if faced with the prospect of actual aggro.

I was there too, age 6 in what would've been my first full season going to PR.

Can just about remember Mariner's injury too, didn't realise that was his last game for us though.

I was there . For some reason my dad decided to sit us in the Cobbold lower instead of our normal spot on the Churchmans.

Still remember the game really clearly despite being 40 years ago.
