T20 World Cup - Afghanistan 11:31 - Jun 25 with 1229 viewsCafe_Newman

Congratulations to Afghanistan for reaching the semis.
First they beat the Aussies in the Super 8s and then they knock them out of the competition.
Well played Rashid Khan and Co.

Good stuff. I watched their innings live and they were making a proper pigs ear of it. 19 dot balls in overs 18 and 18!

Glad they and not Aus got over the line. Serial chokers SA next up.

Whilst it's always a delight seeing Australia get knocked out of any competition, celebrating the Afghanistan success should always be caveated with the Taliban's appalling stance towards women

And before anyone pipes up with "keep politics out of sport", the ban on women playing cricket in Afghanistan has well and truly meant that sports and politics are intertwined

Some rather dubious behaviour though, looks like the faking of an injury to delay the game until the rain started:

Still, good to see the Aussies knocked out.

The Afghan people have had a miserable recent history largely (though not exclusively) because of the county's geography - between oil/gas producing states and areas of high hydrocarbon consumption. The country's cricket team is one of the few things the normal Afghan can feel proud about.

Involvement at the highest levels in cricket can only modernise the country and improve the plight of normal Afghans, especially the women. Exclusion from competition (as has happened in the past) will only isolate the country and worsen the lives of millions of people.

I see wishing success on the Afghans as a very positive route to modernising the country rather than condoning the country's leadership.

I'm not too disappointed to see Afghanistan competing with the big boys in all aspects of the sport.

Mike Aherton, Steve Smith, Darren Lehmann, David Warner, Cameron Bancroft and all high profile cricket cheats approve this comment.

It's just a shame that it had to happen against Bangladesh.

Would have been interesting to see the furore if this behaviour had occurred in a match between two higher profile countries. Sadly, this is all part of professional sport these days & it's a potential flaw in the D/L system.

Dubious behaviour against the Aussies proves the point about the biter getting bitten.
