Forest Green 1-0 Sheffield Wednesday 21:26 - Aug 11 with 1944 viewsThe_Romford_Blue

Looking back, that was such an enormous turning point in everything that has happened for us in the last 2 years.

Wednesday were 13 points clear. They were virtually up. Forest Green were bottom and winless for the best part of 4 months. Plymouth were flying and it really did look like playoffs for us.

Suddenly Forest Green beat Wednesday who then can’t buy a win over the next 6 weeks and we go on an incredible run.

The Forest Green result and the subsequent game for Wednesday which they also lost before we next played seemed to give us some belief. Belief which turned into momentum. Momentum which turned into promotion. And that promotion and momentum subsequently resulted in another promotion and in 6 days time a premier league game against Liverpool.

My boys still go on about this now, they are devastated FGR went down as they always like to play as them against Sheff Weds on FIFA/EAFC ad this match has stuck in the memory so much and both have FGR shirts from that season - it’s very strange.

I was going to Wembley with my eldest that day for an England game so we were getting radio updates so guess it ended up quite memorable as a different experience of following a game

Whilst one result doesn’t define a season, when the dust settles you can see the turning points. A little like last season, and knowing how significant QPR 4-0 Leeds was.

I still believe considering our form at the end of 22/23 we would have won the play-offs, but it’s never guaranteed. Just takes one bad performance.

Weirdly, this result benefitted us, Plymouth and Wednesday. Without this result, that incredible game against Peterborough in the play-offs might not happen.

I thought it was nothing more than an off day on their March to the L1 title. It’s how they viewed it and so did I. Wrong. It was a major turning point.

Would we have won the play offs that season, or indeed last. Tbh, having seen us in all of our attempts, I wouldn’t have fancied us even making Wembley. It’s why I enjoyed watching play offs without out us having to worry about them.

Duncan Ferguson’s only win in charge there too, crazy stuff.

While the FGR result was a surprise, Wednesday had dropped points in their 2 previous matches - 1-1 Bolton (H) and 4-2 Barnsley (A). This was then followed up with 3 score draws, Cheltenham (A), Lincoln (H), Oxford (A) - 14 points lost!

I think our turning point were the 2 games at the beginning of Feb. Cambridge (A) - poor performance, but some how managed to "escape" with a point. Following week Wednesday (H), when we could/should have gone 3-0 down. Then Broadhead steps up, and it's like a switch being flicked on.
Although we struggled mid-week against Bristol Rovers, we smashed FGR the following Saturday, and never looked back.

Broady's free kick just before half time changed everything.

Yeah, Sheffield Wednesday went into our March international break three points ahead with two matches in hand. During that period they played Barnsley, FG and Cheltenham and ended up being four points ahead with Town having the game in hand. A crucial period for us without even playing given that we could have been 12 points behind.

Jack is exactly the same mate. Loves FGR as a result.
