Bit of a weakness (or risk) in our shape 10:17 - Dec 9 with 552 viewsthebooks

And this goes back to Harry Clark even in League One.

Leif gets right forward so we have a sort of 3 man defence when in possession, but it seems a bit lopsided/under-protected on the right, and teams occasionally target that space.

Bournemouth doubled up really wide on their left and Tavernier (I think it was him) kept playing inside which meant Johnson sometimes had 3 jobs at once.

Now, Tuanzebe is our best defender full-stop, and may have dealt with it a bit better, but I thought Johnson had a hell of a job on his hands, especially in the first half.

(Posted in defence of him, partly because of the twæt two rows down who wouldn’t stop shouting at him the whole of the first half.)

It was Semenyo and Kerkez on their left, our right, and it was a constant problem. Omari would at times be pressing their left side centre half and Johnson would have two players on him. I thought Bournemouth were terrific, they always had a spare player.

I noticed that. Time and again teams switch the ball into acres of space on our right. Leeds and others did it last season too so it isn’t just the player. Agree, it does look a bit lopsided at times.

Johnson did alright, given he was short of match fitness. He was left hellishly exposed out there.

The thing is, any weakness or gaps, the quality of the PL means there’s a good chance you will concede when they get in. The speed and accuracy of what these teams do is something else.

I just posted something similar on another thread. Johnson was being told to hold in a central 3 and it is hard to fault him for not being tight onto Semenyo and find him running at him full pelt. I thought Johnson did ok given the set up and that Semenyo is one of the hotly wanted players in the league.

Poll: best attacking central midfielder?

Exactly this. North Lower numpties regularly target our RB as being 'out of position' when they have no consideration of the fact they're being *told* to take a narrow starting position to force teams wide.

That being said, I definitely prefer Ben Johnson as a right wing back in a five than a traditional right back in a four.
