Lack of Premier League experience? 21:36 - Dec 21 with 1060 viewsDJR

When you watch a game like today, I wonder if the issue we have is that we don't have enough Premier League experience.

I am not criticising our players from last couple of seasons but wonder if we bought too many players in the summer with Championship experience "on spec", and perhaps hoping to make a profit on them. Or we bought player like Cajuste and Philips who are potentially top draw but are not up to speed.

Of course, Delap has turned out to be the business (hopefully) but Clarke, Hutchinson and Smzodics have not exactly set the world alight.

And just look, for example, at what a 39 year old Ashley Young is currently able to offer Everton.

I'm thinking that. Only Cajuste and Delap have, out of those reliably available, improved our first XI. Others have boosted the squad but I don't think they've had much impact on the starting quality. And it's too Championship heavy rather than bringing in Premier League quality players.

A small point, but if you are questioning Hutchinson’s signing or performances I don’t know what you are watching.

The new financial rules effectively prevent Championship clubs from doing that. That is why sides like Forest and Leicester have pushed the rules.

If Brighton were to get promoted these days I doubt they would survive, same with Brentford and Bournemouth.

The financial rules are effectively closing the door on sides with no PL experience in their squads getting promoted and staying up.

He clearly deserves to be in the team, but McKenna has said that he didn't want him to be playing so much at his age, and in my view perhaps too much is being asked of him given that whilst he was very good in the Spurs and Man Utd games, his level of performance has dropped off since then. Or the opposition have adapted their game to counter him.

I still don't understand why we have an ipswich version of salah and trying so desperately to not use him on that right hand side.

I just don't get how he performed so well at the back end of last season on that right side. Rip that book up and think nah we will develop him in the middle.

Yes I know he roams. But it's not the same.

He and J Clarke should be wingers with davis being a full ack and not being relied upon to create our opportunities.

a niche perspective

It's not that our players don't have PL "experience", most of them haven't played in the PL because they haven't been or aren't good enough. Some of the younger players might well be in time, but we couldn't afford to buy ready made PL players. WE chose promising, young Championship players, which is better for the longer term development of the squad than a few ageing PL cast-offs.
