Rather odd that the piece puts "surrounded by his loved ones" in inverted commas (just like I did).
Either the author doesn't want to be sued by any of the 'loved ones' for being falsely accused of loving him or maybe the author felt he was a hated figure.
I think it's the latter.

That always struck me as most likely a strained relationship of convenience engineered to make her appear more moderate than her father.
