Truly think we need both another CM and a striker to give us a good chance of staying up.

But I think there is a world in which Delap and Hirst do the job for us... I struggle to see the midfield as it is now getting us over the line

I do agree we probably need one of each. We could perhaps do with a reasonable striker on loan from outside the prem. But if I had to pick one for a marquee signing, I'd go for the central midfielder.

We desperately need to add legs to our central midfield. A box to box type player - essentially another Cajuste. Cajuste can't manage 90 minutes. Morsey is a good ball-winner and ball-retainer and a decent passer, but too slow to get up and down the field at this level. Phillips isn't that quick either, great on the ball but not so great off it. And Taylor isn't good enough with the ball.

Its obvious when we break that the midfield struggle to get up to support the forwards, and so many of our attacks break down that way as Hutchinson or Delap have no support and end up surrounded trying to beat 2 or 3 players. Add another dynamic premier-quality midfielder and we stay up I think.

I'm not sure your basic assumption is correct*. Squad size is perhaps more of a limiting factor than money.

* Tho understand it could well be a rhetorical device.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

I don't believe our problem is scoring goals despite the fact that we are currently not scoring many. It is midfield where although not short of numbers we are short of runners. Box to box type players. Neither Morsy or Phillips play high up the field and both lack mobility. Taylor has never been able to nail down a place and seems to me on a par with Chaplin (Yes I know he's not a midfielder) both would be decent Championship players. Of course we need a Morsy type player in midfield, all the best sides over the years have a stopper.

I can see an argument for needing both but personally think it needs to be a striker. A CM would take too long to integrate to make the impact we’d need.

Arguably we need both a striker and a central midfielder!

On balance I’d go for the midfielder because for me central midfield is where our current problem is. We can’t keep control of the ball long enough to feed our forward players and it’s becoming more noticeable. Much of that is down to tactics but not sure enough quality is there either.

Could be a pointless argument though because we must be close to having maxed out what we are allowed to spend.

CM.

Possession is not everything, we know that from the good results we've had, but we're being dominated too much and it's resulting in scraps for the attacking midfielders / striker.

Our possession has become significantly worse in the last 4 league games. 10% down at home and 12% down away, if we look at all games since the beginning of November.

This is, I would suggest, not down to midfield, but a change of tactics since Walton came in, and with it more balls being lumped up field and bypassing the midfield. These more frequent balls lumped upfield invariably result in possession being given back to the opposition very quickly.
