The local police told him and prompted him to write a statement that would get him off. He didn't want to do that. I guess his was making some kind of point.

I think I also was told he'd shot Barras in the knee, and then killed him as he crawled away.

I'm not sure how much of that is 100% true, but I'm pretty certain about the police bit.

I’d heard the bit about finishing him off up close before - didn’t realise the police stuff.

IIRC he had anticipated them coming and laid in waiting rather than calling the police first.

With that and the 'finishing him off' I can only see the fact that they were Travelers being a contributing factor to why it was ruled as manslaughter rather than premeditated murder

Sounds about how I remember it, although also to be factored in is he had been hit before by the same people, had tried the police, and they had not been much help. We shouldn't be surprised (or in my opinion in this case, overly judgemental) when people let down by the justice system take matters into their own hands.
