BBC Sounds being turned off for overseas listeners 20:00 - Mar 6 with 2611 views | BonchosBicycle | I guess this means overseas supporters won't be able to listen to Radio Suffolk any more - as well as any other BBC station apart from Radio 4 and the World Service. Terrible news. BBC Radio has kept me feeling connected to home in the decades I've lived in the US.
BBC Sounds being turned off for overseas listeners on 20:28 - Mar 6 with 2537 views | vapour_trail | The BBC is gradually being defunded. Drop off in quality is inevitable, and visible throughout all parts of the network that I use. It’s a shame, but it’s not going to be reversed, and it’s obviously supported by all the very rich men who own the rest of the media landscape.

BBC Sounds being turned off for overseas listeners on 21:29 - Mar 6 with 2378 views | DJR | That's awful. I listen to it when I'm on holiday, and love to doze off listening to the World Service. But a VPN may well do the trick.

I'll probably give it a try but preliminary research suggests that the BBC is pretty good at blocking. Seen a few people say they have variable luck at best.

A guy in a pub who owns a dog once told me you need to use a obfuscated server on your VPN (this hides the fact you’re using a VPN), he reckoned Nord VPN has this offering and works a treat.

Probably the two stations I listen to least sadly. Apart from Radio Suffolk for Town, I always listen to 6Music in the car. American radio is the worst sh*te imaginable. We have satellite radio too but that's not much better tbh.

The bumph from the BBC says the following. "For listeners who reside in the UK, you will still be able to use the BBC Sounds mobile app when you are abroad." But this is not the case "If you live outside the UK or take extended trips outside the UK". Quite how they differentiate I am not sure.

Ah, apologies. I misread your post. Yeah, 6music would be a big loss. Although I feel like I'm becoming one of the miserable old men I used to mock for thinking that it's going downhill!

Used to drive around London as a courier in the 90s listening to Gideon Coe and Fi Glover on the old Radio London. Been good to hear him with Marc Riley on 6Music now.

I'm massively missing the earlier Marc Riley weekday slot. Used to be perfect listening whilst cooking dinner The new music fix with Tom and Deb does nothing for me, even though I quite like both of them individually

The politics of BBC funding aside, people under 30 do not watch/listen to the BBC any longer. It's viewed as very uncool, middle-class, try-hard ex-student-protester-turned-geography teacher. It will die off (as will many others might I add) because it did nothing to evolve with the times or engage with a newer audience. The danger is kids are getting news from TikTok instead!

Is this just your opinion or have you read something that suggests this? I'd imagine viewing/listening habits for people under 30 have changed massively away from traditional means of media to more tikitok/youtube algorithm based, but I certainly wouldn't see this as being unique to the BBC or to do with them not trying to engage newer audiences.

Agree. It needs to adapt and evolve. As someone says further down it is in an incredibly competitive environment re clicks, engagement, retention etc. It will just die a death if it continues to over-service small, aging audiences.

"ex-student-protester-turned-geography teacher" You've got me. It's a fair cop. Indeed, everyone I know who uses the BBC is the same. And types like us think the BBC has a right wing bias. [Post edited 7 Mar 17:44]

I have surfshark and just tested BBC sounds and Iplayer using a Surfshark UK server and it works fine. Of course, I can't say it will work in the future. But at the moment it does.
