Apologies if this has been posted before, but I just came across this and thought it an excellent appraisal of PR from a neutral's point of view.

He is surprised at the intense rivalry with Norwich. After all they are 45 miles away !
But what he clearly does not realise is that such feelings do not just come from a short distance but from history.

All the great derby games are thus. Many are religious. City v United, Liverpool v Everton, Arsenal v Spurs and the greatest of them all Celtic v Rangers.
Others historical such as Derby v Leicester v Forest who are all Viking settlements.
We all know what is the greatest rivalry in cricket. And how far are they apart ?

Town v City has nothing to do with Ipswich v Norwich and has everything to do with Suffolk v Norfolk. After all the southfolk and the northfolk were knocking ten bells out of each other when Julius Caesar turned up to separate them.

I enjoyed the bit where Dean Saunders morphed into Ian Rush and then back to Dean Saunders. No wonder the ref was so confused that he gave a penalty.

The Swindon 1-4 was September 1991. A day or two before I started Sixth Form, and I won £100 on the Golden Goal thanks to Swindon’s early goal.

The ground went all seater in the summer of 1992.

And Colchester seems to have moved nine miles further away. Or United played at Kelvedon for a while without any line noticing

I lived in Kelvedon Hatch many years ago. Which is nowhere near Kelvedon.

Cambridge being 55 miles to the east is quite impressive seeing as there isn't any land there.

Yes, a few details in there are a a bit confused. There always were away fans on the Cobbold Stand just not all of them.

Hoddle was bloody good that game.
